Officials accused in encroachment of protected Phuket forest

PHUKET: Officers from the Royal Forest Department yesterday (Jan 18) inspected 83 rai of hill land located near Bang Wad reservoir which was encroached for agriculture and made a road in the area.

The inspection, led by Suphachai Suksai, chief of the Encroachment Prevention and Suppression Region 4 office under the Royal Forest Department, was conducted at about 4pm.

The land is located in the Khao Nakkerd protected forest, which has a designated area crossing into Wichit and Kathu.

The team found a road about 1.5km long starting from the foot of hills in Kathu and crossing the hills to Wichit. Some trees were cut to make way for the road, and the team also found plantations of durian and bitter bean (‘sator’, in Thai) trees.

Mr Suphachai estimated the cost of the damage done over the whole 83 rai to be more than B10 million.

“This inspection was conducted as we received a complaint from a local resident that they saw some administrative officers as well as those who were relevant to forest suppression at the site while bulldozers were making the road,” Mr Suphachai said.

“A local resident went to warn the workers who were making the road that the forest is protected. A worker told him that they knew that well, but they worked for a ‘big man’ and they were not afraid if they were charged,” he said.

“This is a really big encroachment, and the people behind this must be big as well,” he noted.

“They have acted aggressively, without fear,” Mr Suphachai said.

“The top of the hills is about 300 metres above sea level. We can see a 360-degree view from there, which could be a reason for this encroachment,” Mr Suphachai also noted.

“Today we cannot give much detail about the encroachment, but we will report our findings to high-ranking officers of our department for sure. Tomorrow we will come to continue our inspection of the area,” he said.

If the outcome is the encroachment stopping, or Mr. Suksai being shot in the head while sitting in his Hilux at a red light, my guess would be for the latter.

Will this article be followed up by an article relating to the visit?

Phuket officials confirmed involved in protected forest encroachment

PHUKET: Officers from the Royal Forest Department have confirmed that local Phuket officials were involved in allowing a private individual to encroach on protected forest land near Bang Wad reservoir to make way for a road over the hills in Kathu and to clear areas of the protected forest to create plantations.

Suphachai Suksai, chief of the Encroachment Prevention and Suppression Region 4 office under the Royal Forest Department, inspected the site with a team of officers for the second day yesterday (Jan 19).

Mr Suphachai said that if the encroachment exceeded 100 rai, the case would be handed over to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) for further action.

    And there's the get out.

Let me guess, it will be 99 rai.

With a separate, second encroachment of 99 rai directly next to it.

And when the DSI have reviewed it they will hand it to the CSU/CSI/BBC/ITV/DSO and bar, and on with the show we go.

I'm not sure I'd support the public execution of a man reporting encroachers, but each to their own.

So, nothing will happen to the guy . . .

This is a good example why we no longer live in Thailand, nothing is real or set.

Everything is arbitrary and he hist flows downhill . . . the whole society fails to understand actions and consequences, the difference between right and wrong when one can alter the outcome of one's actions.

But that was always the case, Fatimah, and it has never been anything other than a medieval system of vested interests operating in an environment of corruption, cronyism and nepotism exercising power over the less privileged who are made subject to laws to which their masters, lawful and otherwise, are immune.

The acquisition of wealth and power is simply a desired outcome that is divorced from any sense of morality, an irrelevant factor within their society and in truth most others in Asia, and is the celebration of one's acumen in joining the right cabal, exploiting fallibility, having good luck and hedging the future with devotional offerings ......just in case.

The trick is to enjoy the idiocy of it all but the past decade has seen a steady evaporation of what passed for fun and really it is now simply a somewhat dreary place devoid of any culture.

But in truth the alternatives elsewhere offer little solace and there it is.

I don't see where he said he supports it, merely that he thinks it is the more likely outcome than any meaningful action.
