BANGKOK (NNT) - The Immigration Bureau has announced it will prosecute, to the fullest extent, Thai nationals making illegal crossings to and from Myanmar, while tightening border protection.
The Immigration Bureau Commissioner Pol Lt Gen Sompong Chingduong has announced the police will pursue charges against persons involved with the trafficking of migrant workers into the country, with the possibility of asset seizures, by virtue of the money laundering law, from those found involved in human trafficking.
He has warned that while Thai nationals, who illegally cross the border to work in casinos in neighboring countries, are welcomed to return and receive treatment in case they contract COVID-19, they will also be subject to prosecutions according to the Immigration Act.
The Immigration Bureau is now working with provincial offices and related agencies to tighten land border controls. They are expecting an increase in illegal land crossings from 15 January to 13 February as the government will be allowing informal workers to enroll in a COVID-19 screening program.
With this program, Thai nationals working in neighboring countries will be allowed to apply to return. They will be screened for COVID-19, with those testing positive being admitted for treatment, while other returnees must serve their 14-day quarantine.
