Jomtien Poker Rooms Raided – 21 Arrested Including 16 Foreigners

Police and government agencies were out in force during a raid on an illegal gambling den in the early hours of this morning at a Jomtien condominium.

The raid on two daily rented rooms was headed by Region 2 chief Maj-Gen Thiti Saengsawang and the head of the Chonburi provincial police, Pol Col Ekkaphop Inthaweewat.

Also present were officers from Nong Prue and Bang Lamung constabularies.

21 gamblers were arrested – 14 Chinese, 5 Thais, one Cambodian and one Singaporean.

The gamblers were playing a range of poker games. Gambling tables, playing cards and chips were confiscated and taken into evidence.

Mr Inthaweewat said this was a state and national RTP measure against the spread of the virus. He said that the gamblers, most of them foreigners, had a flagrant disregard for the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Two rooms on the fifth floor of the building, 517 and 518, had been rented on a daily basis.

Immigration reported that 5 of the Chinese were on overstay and the Cambodian had been smuggled into Thailand illegally.

They will all be facing charges related to illegal gambling and contravention of the Covid-19 emergency decree.

Officials said the inquiry would be expanded.

People's nationality always seems to be very, very important to these reporters.

The Chinese, before Covid, were buying up many Pattaya properties, placing a deposit with a long term payment scheme and turning them into gambling dens overnight.

They advertise pool parties and were drawing many hi-so locals including Thai's from Bangkok but have been shut down of late due to Covid.

I expect my Mooban's car pack to be full of mini buses again when the restrictions are lifted.
