Driver allegedly obstructs ambulance, patient dies

A driver may face serious charges after he allegedly cut in front of and stopped an ambulance that was rushing to pick up a patient who later died on the way to a local hospital.

Emergency responders received a call to pick up a patient who was in critical condition and being given CPR at his home in Samut Prakan, a province just southeast of Bangkok. They turned on their siren and emergency lights, hurrying to the scene.

As they rushed to the home, a car cut in front of the ambulance, blocking the lane and causing it to stop. The driver, 38 year old Samrit Maneerit, then allegedly got out of his car and walked over to the ambulance to berate the emergency responders. A nurse video recorded the incident on her smartphone.

Samrit drove off and the ambulance rushed to the patient’s home where 46 year old Pracha Boribun was suffering from a seizure along with trouble breathing. He died on the way to Samut Prakan Hospial.

Police found the driver at his home and say he had a blood alcohol level of 190 milligrams per decilitre of blood. The legal limit is 50. Samrit was charged with driving while intoxicated and obstructing an ambulance. Samrit allegedly told police that the ambulance was following close behind his car and he got angry.

Pracha’s family say they plan to file a criminal complaint against the driver for committing an act intentionally causing death.

maybe so, but it would be hard if not impossible to prove that the delay to the ambulance was the actual cause of death, or that the drivers alcohol level was not the result of drinking once he returned home.

I would have moved over but Thai ambulances always drive around with their blue lights flashing maybe they should only be turned on when it is an emergency so you know it is an emergency.

They truly are morons and quite literally two swings out of the jungle.

    Quite why the ambulance driver:

    1. stopped.
    2. spoke to the cretin wasting time in futile discussion with what was demonstrably an intoxicated monkey boy.
    3. didn't immediately call the police.
    4. didn't get out of his ambulance and kick the ape in its bollocks thus paralysing its cognitive ability to take any further action.

Thai are dysfunctional on just so many levels.

There is a common assumption that an ambulance which is not travelling at speed or with sirens active is not on urgent business; this is not the case at all. A patient with spinal injuries, for example, should be transported slowly, at a steady pace, with minimal interruption. Lights might not required for simple patient transport, but an emergency ambulance crew which is not on urgent business arguably has no business driving around at all.

Speaking as someone who has been a patient in the back of a Thai ambulance, without sirens and without great speed, in pain from a life threatening medical condition, I would advise that most people in such circumstances would be grateful if everybody could just get out of the bloody way.

Most of the time they are just going to lunch. Lights on but no siren. Police are just as guilty.

    Modern day crying wolf?

Sometimes in Bangkok traffic there is no room to get out of the way.
