Thailand to build its own spacecraft to orbit the moon within 7 years

Thailand is planning to build and launch its own spacecraft to orbit and explore the moon within 7 years, the Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) claimed today.

Innovation Minister Anek Laothamatas revealed to the press during a press conference of “Covid-19 Vaccine For Thais” at Chulalongkorn University auditorium today, December 14, that besides Thailand’s own Covid-19 vaccination, the Thai government is going to officially announce a spacecraft project in the middle of January next year.

The spacecraft will be launched and orbit the moon in the next 7 years, according to the Minister. Thailand would be the fifth country in Asia to send its own spacecraft to the moon, after ones from China, India, Japan, and South Korea.

The project is initially planned for 7 years and may primarily be established under a fund from the Thai people. More details for funding will be announced later, he added.

Anek stated: “Besides the important announcement of Covid-19 vaccine production, we also proudly announce that Thailand will be the fifth nation in Asia that will be able to build a spacecraft and send it to orbit the moon.”

“Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation and the Thai government promise to continuously move forward for the future of our country. The project will forever change the whole perspective of Thai people that Thailand is no longer a developing country but is a country with a future, opportunity, and hope.”

The obvious and only question that should be posed is:

    Why?

How is the word I would think of. They have not even been able to build a functioning car yet.

Why is simple, think of all the money to be "siphoned off".

As much as I hope that they'll find a suitably comedic way to screw this up (like sending it to the wrong moon or something), they'll probably just cut corners and build a lovely looking rocket which explodes shortly after launch and rains burning fuel down on a kindergarten. Boring....

This is the nation where the police tried to refer a rollercoaster accident to the applicable safety inspectorate, and discovered that there wasn't one. I heard they'd almost finished building the Bangkok MRT network before they realised that they forgot to order any trains.

Ambition is a wonderful thing, but Thailand should perhaps strive to reduce omnibus crash fatalities by about 90% before they start aiming for the stars.

Thai space agencies favour US and European technology to Chinese. So careful with the exploding rockets on launch.

Too expensive but the money would never go to those in need anyway.

I'd like to tie a certain Thai individual to the first launch rocket.

The world's smallest aircraft carrier or the world's biggest Royal Yacht (though not by much), depending on how you want to look at it.
Sporadically operationalish, yes, though nothing since 2011.

sporadically operational? My Nokia or Blackberry from 2011 is possibly still sporadically operational.

Sending a satellite around the moon is as sensible as buying two submarines to defend a country against a non-existent seaborne threat in a marine environment that is largely no deeper than 80 metres.

Boastful, hubristic posturing for no purpose other than jingoistic nationalism is their trademark, and should earn a bob or two for some in circumstances not otherwise available.
