OBEC Gives Permission for Students to Wear Casual Clothing in School

The Office of Basic Education Commission (Obec) has instructed all schools to permit their students to wear casual outfits to school on the first day of the 2nd term.

Obec secretary-general Amporn Pinasa said students should be allowed to wear casual attire on their first day back, as students going to school to study is the best thing that could happen to society.

However, Mr Pinasa said that school dress codes will still apply, and each school will be required to inform parents of their respective dress codes.

The move was announced after “Bad Students”, a group of students pushing for education reforms, called on students to wear casual outfits on the first day of the new school term, as part of a wider civil disobedience campaign.

“Bad Students” also supports the three demands sought by anti-government protesters: the removal of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, a new constitution and reforms to the monarchy, as well as reforms to the education system. Their latest rally took place on 21st November beneath the Siam BTS skytrain station.

The group is known to have members in many schools, including Samsenwittayalai, Triam Udom Suksa, Suankularb Wittayalai Rangsit, Benjamarachalai, Chonratsadorn Umrung, Horwang and Khon Kaen Wittayayon schools.

Mr Pinasa said that Obec believes the Education Ministry’s regulation on student uniforms does not constitute a violation of student rights.

Instead, he said, compliance with such regulations will help students develop discipline, so they can be responsible for themselves and in society.

“If the students insist on wearing casual outfits to school, a committee will be set up to consider this matter,” said the secretary-general, adding the Education Ministry has already begun reviewing the school uniform rule.

The director of Samsen Wittayalai School in Bangkok, Bunyaphon Phothiwatthanat, said students have the right to express themselves, but schools under the Education Ministry are bound by its rules.

“If students wear casual outfits to school, we may talk to them, but won’t reprimand them,” he said.

They're like fucking nine year olds.

The students said they are going to wear mufti to show their displeasure so the big boys say "Ner Ner Nee Ner Ner, we're going to say we let you".

Education minister threatens protesting high school students with legal action

The Ministry of Education’s legal team will ask police to prosecute and shutdown the Bad Student’s platforms for violation of the privacy law, its minister said on Wednesday.

Nataphol Teepsuwan, Education Minister, said the high-school-student-led protest group has violated privacy laws by releasing the names of the schools that have reprimanded and barred students for wearing casual attire to school on Tuesday.

His comments came after high school students across Thailand, in a show of civil disobedience, protested against Thai school uniform regulations by going to school dressed however they want on the first day of the second term.

“The release of the names of teachers and the schools will be problematic in the future and it could be considered as a violation of personal privacy,” he said.

He said the ministry will ask the police to investigate and prosecute the group which could lead to the shutting of its online platforms.

He said legal actions have to be taken because the schools that have been mentioned could have been following the right procedures but they were wrongly incriminated instead.

He added that each teacher that has been implicated by the student protest group could pursue their case individually with the support of the ministry’s legal team.

The Bad Student group has been calling for the reformation of the educational system and Nataphol’s resignation. The Education Minister, who had been in power for less than two years, refused to resign multiple times, citing the time needed to reform.

The names of the schools that were released by the group are:

Kaennakhon Witthayalai School = reprimanded the students who wore casual attire before sending them to their classrooms

Bodindecha (Sing Singhaseni) School = barred the students from entering their classrooms until they have a talk with the director of the school

Horwang School = Allow the students to enter their classrooms but threatened to cut academic point and if the offense is repeated, they might look for a new school for the students

Assumption Suksa School = Barred the students from entering their classsom and told them to go home

Minister Threatens Lawsuit at Student Complaint Website

    Khaosod English

BANGKOK — Education minister Nataphol Teepsuwan on Wednesday threatened a legal action against high school activists who run a website where students can report abuses at their school.

Nataphol said during an interview with MCOT’s “Inside Thailand” news show this morning that the disclosure of teachers’ and schools’ names on the website is considered a violation of privacy and therefore a probable cause for lawsuits.

His comment came after a hundred of students staged a protest in front of the education ministry to demand an end to compulsory uniforms and other rules deemed as excessive.

Does Thailand have a Data Protection law or is this just more abuse of the deliberately vague "Computer Crimes" Act?

    I can understand teachers,

but do public schools have a 'right to privacy'?
