Bali Tourists could be jailed for drinking alcohol

The rest of SEA says "Go on, do it!".

Tourists to Bali could face jail-time for drinking alcohol if a proposed law change goes ahead.

Indonesia's House of Representatives continues to mull over a draft bill that would ban booze and threaten those found producing, distributing and storing it with jail sentences of two to 10 years.

There would be less severe sentences for those caught consuming alcohol.

The proposal is being mooted by 21 politicians from conservative Islamic parties, who are citing parts of the Koran indicating that Muslims should not drink alcohol.

Officials from the Indonesian island of Bali, a hugely popular holiday spot, have made it clear they are not in support of the restrictions.

What various bombings couldn't do, this quite possibly would. It's not that alcohol NEEDS tp be part of a holiday but the fact that it is illegal just smacks of zealotry on a ME scale - not a good choice

Reminds me of a business trip when I was working out of Amsterdam. I had just arrived at our distribution partner's office in Stockholm, direct from Kopenhagen.

I was telling him about our Danish partner's marketing plans and the Swede just said:

"Can't use that here, Danes are like the Italians of Scandinavia"

I read the rest of the article, it doesn’t say much. But essentially every year or so conservative Islamic politicians make an announcement like this to garner support and votes from their mentally handicapped base.

nothing to see here, it won’t happen.

Far too many visits to Denmark when I was stationed in Eckernförde to argue with that.

Love the spats between Scandis . . . especially after they've had a few. Then the Finns come walking along with their funny language and want to be friends - only the Swedes like them as half of Finns are part Swede.

Im inclined to agree. Bali is predominantly Hindu, with quite a few Muslims in the population. They are mostly here to make a living from tourism. Due to the close proximity of Australia, we still get quality beef for our consumption.
Thousands of locals have returned to their villages due to unemployment, quite a few have returned to Java, including Muslims and Catholics who came for relatively well paid work in hospitality and tourism. They already have fairly draconian laws for what westerners might feel are low level drug use and possession. An alcohol ban is might kill off any remaining tourism, and the jobs that go with it.
Many Indonesians who live and work here don’t drink alcohol, whatever their background or religious persuasion.
Most branded alcohol is expensive here, so drinking to excess, while it does happen, is fairly unusual. The locally produced Arak, is a bit like moonshine, so sensible folk usually avoid it, despite attempts to control and regulate production, the strength and potency can vary quite wildly. Alcohol sales are already restricted to licensed stores and availability to the millions of tourists who used to come here before lockdown was demand driven.
Just like quality beef and sales of vegemite, it caters to the Australian pallete. There are plenty of Europeans and Russians who benefit from that influence too.
I can’t see it happening in a supposedly secular governed country, especially to a province built so heavily on international tourism.

Nah, we all like the Finns( or Finlændar, if they have a bit of Nazi swede blood).

Do you know the game of 'Jorke'?

You go with some finnish guys into a room, close the light, drink a case of vodka, a random guy then throws a knife and the first one who gets hit is 'Jorke'

You can play it just two guys, but it takes more Vodka

True, but it has a certain amount of autonomy. I believe it is similar to Sabah and Sarawak in that respect.

I meant it more as an off-the-cuff remark, though. As the article explains, the 21 geniuses stipulate that Muslims cannot drink alcohol (though it's a bit contested re. quantity and hadiths etc..., plus that doesn't stop them fro drinking).

Just like in Malaysia - you're not allowed to sell alcohol to Muslims . . . so don't.

One thing I've learned about the Imams over the years.... they want every fucker to be as miserable as they are.

Well obviously they are also concerned that people will be tempted away from listening to their bullshit as well.

Indeed, but Christianity preaches that people should try live a moral life and resist temptation whereas Islam says humans cannot resist temptation so better to remove any chance.

I’m usually content to listen to temptation, but List ring to inner voices from the more pragmatic side of my mind works for me. Instead of ‘fuck it why not’, I often just reply to myself, ‘no thanks, enough is enough’.
