Pork dyed with pig blood sold as expensive beef in Bangkok

Eaten at a barbecue restaurant in Bangkok? There’s a slight chance the beef may have actually been pork. Apparently, local meat suppliers steeped pork in pig blood to give it that red meat colour and sold it to Bangkok eateries as expensive beef, according to Thailand’s Department of Livestock. Meat and cattle carcasses were seized from a home in Nakhon Pathom last month and recent tests show that more than 100 kilograms of “beef” is actually pork.

Authorities examined 7 meat samples and found that 3 contained hazardous microbes while the others contained pig DNA. Cattle carcasses weighing a total of 300 kilograms were examined, but the department was unable to determine if the carcasses carried any diseases. The department was also unable to track where the meat came from.

The Bangkok Post did not name any restaurants that purchased from the supplier, but said “the house supplied fake beef to many barbecue eateries in Bangkok.” The meat was also being sold online. The department is now warning local barbeque restaurants about the fake beef.

The owner of the home, who was not named in reports, is facing charges for allegedly violating livestock and consumer laws.

It says a lot about Thai food that you can't actually tell what meat it's made with.

^^ It's been going on for years. I've seen it myself several times in wet markets. If you're going to buy beef, go to a Muslim butcher or a decent grocery.

Pork disguised as beef is a tradition that started in China at least a decade ago. Perhaps this is part of Thailand's "globalization" process?

There was a post/thread a few months ago, on how the major food outlets even in the west camouflage low quality and spoiling/expired meats by painting with blood, mixing in mince, and burying under/with more expensive meats.

And as it happens in the west, no big deal that Thais are on board.

I think it had to do with horse meat IIRC.

I also remember some Thai getting nicked on a bike having been paid Bt500 to deliver a mass of dried dog meat to a Thai restaurant that was going to pass it off as beef.

The moral of the story here is either Thais don't have a fucking clue what beef tastes like, or the taste of the meat is so heavily overpowered with spices that they can't taste the shit anyway.

Which I believe was the original point when refrigerators were not invented and meat tended to go off rather quickly.

There's that as well, but I was referring specifically to treating and then repackaging spoiled/spoiling meats.

Not sure if this is the vid I posted earlier, but it's on topic.

When wifey buys mince, it's the cuts that she's chosen and then watched through the mincer, after it's flushed.
