American goes amok with stolen gun in Pattaya, kills self after police showdown

An American man shot himself in the head after trying to fire at police officers early on Tuesday in Pattaya City.

Just after midnight, police were told that a 25-year-old American tourist called Giavasis Michael had stolen a gun from a shooting range in Bang Lamung district and fled toward his condo.

He was then seen arguing with an 18-year-old local, who happened to be near the condo, hitting him on the head and firing a gun in the air to threaten him.

Residents ran out of the building before police showed up to deal with the situation.Police found the man standing at the building’s entrance and screaming at the ground. When they tried to approach him, the man started firing at the police and ended up injuring a local reporter in the foot.

The American then retreated to his room and police called on the man’s friend to help calm him down.

However, when the friend was unable to contact Michael, police broke into the man’s room to find him dead on the bed with a bullet wound in his head. Judging from the dried blood, police reckoned he had killed himself about two hours earlier.

Police said the man had a history of mental illness and addiction to illegal substances, which may have led to his loss of control.

The body will be sent to the Central Institute of Forensic Science Thailand and officers will call on the US embassy to inform the dead mans’ family.

    Just a moment...

    Amazing after the drama outside.....

He probably saw the election results with trump having a good chance of being elected. I can sympathize.

That's one thing I like about the Thai police.

Imagine the shoe on the other foot, a Thai in Texas steals a gun, shoots at people, shooting a reporter, there'd be Apache attack helicopters taking out the building in under 5 minutes, with the investigators ruling that excessive force wasn't used besides there being 160 bodies of collateral damage.

Remarkable work from the Thai gumshoes. After two hours of negotiating with a dead body, they determined that he might have committed suicide.

    Extraordinary even by their standards.

A US citizen has been shot and killed after going on a gun rampage in Thailand.

Michael Giavasis, 25, stole a Glock 9mm from a shooting range in Pattaya before firing it in the air as he rode a motorcycle back to his apartment yesterday evening.

Police gave chase while ordering the area to be locked down. Giavasis arrived back at his home where he opened fire in the car park outside, hitting a television reporter in the foot and attacking a passerby.

Michael Giavasis, 25, stole a Glock 9mm from a shooting range in Pattaya before going on a gun rampage

The stolen gun. Giavasis arrived back at his home where he opened fire in the car park outside, hitting a television reporter in the foot and attacking a passerby

Passerby Pitchakorn, 18, said: I was waiting outside the building and was slapped by the foreign man before he threatened my sister by aiming a gun at her forehead. Then he fired his handgun in the air.

The injured reporter, Tivakorn Kitmanee, said: I saw he was firing the gun so I jumped to the ground but a bullet hit me in the foot.

Giavasis, who had remained in Thailand as a tourist during the coronavirus lockdown, barricaded himself in his room.

Dozens of armed cops surrounded the building while they negotiated with the shooter. However, when they broke down the door of his fourth-floor room at 3am he was found dead from a gunshot wound to his head.

Police Colonel Khemmarin Phitsamai said the American man refused to meet the officers and a translator while they tried to resolve the incident.

The American man died from a gunshot wound, which could have been suicide. There will be an investigation, an officer said.

The officer said Giavasis may have killed himself after realising there was no way to escape.

He said: We evacuated every person from the condominium building so they were all safe. Roads were also closed so drivers were not at risk.

Forensic police were examining the room. The body was taken to the Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy.

The U.S. Embassy has been informed of the death of Giavasis, who was born in Greece, and his relatives have been informed.
