Monk wins 18M from lottery, gives money to temple and people

A monk has won the Thai government lottery bringing in 18 Million THB with 3 winning tickets, a winning ticket will bring you 6 Million THB. The monk revealed a lottery seller came into the temple asking for help because he couldn’t sell all the tickets. He helped purchase some tickets and 3 turned out to be winning tickets. The monk has given 1 Million to each of his children and the remaining goes to the temple and others who need help.

The Khaosod News Team visited Monk Montri Samajjo 67-year-old known as Monk Piak from the Wat Thinnakorn Nimit in Nonthaburi Province on 3 November 2020. Monk Piak won 3 lottery tickets in the latest draw on the 1st of this month. Monk Piak stated he has been a monk at the temple for 7 years. Before buying the lottery tickets he had a strange dream, where he was touching an old coffin. Monk Piak didn’t think much of the dream when he woke up.

On 31 October 2020 Monk Piak was taking a walk in the temple when a lottery seller approached him. The seller asked the monk to help buy tickets, Monk Piak felt sorry for the seller but he had no money. Monk Piak borrowed 2,000 THB from another monk in the same temple. He purchased tickets with two-digit suffix numbers of 04, 40, 47, 74, and 44. Each number came in a set of 3 tickets, coming to a total of 1,500 THB.

Then when the winning lottery numbers were announced on the 1st he decided to check if he happened to win any prizes, winning the first prize was not on his mind. Monk Piak noticed a set of the tickets all had 04. Then as he looked closer the Monk realized all numbers matched the winning prize 506404. Monk Piak revealed he went to cash in the tickets right away. The monk has 3 children, he gave them 1 Million THB each. A part of the winnings has been given to the temple and people in need. The remaining will be saved to help others in the future.

Beside that he should not have it either... (How did he buy the Iphone anyway? What comes the first? Hen or egg?)

But perhaps he got it dropped into his alms bowl at his morning route?

Removing oneself from worldly goods/possessions - minimalizing humbly.

Appears that this hasn't been for quite some time.

I was told there were two types of monk, those that do touch cash, and those that don't. Often those that don't go around with someone to handle the cash for them.

However, the dude gambling 2K on lottery tickets just seems completely wrong for a "monk".

Lottery winning monk leaves temple because so many people asked for money

A monk with winning lottery numbers was forced to flee his temple in northwest metro Bangkok after people would not stop coming to ask for money.

Assistant abbot Sitthi Woradit of Wat Thinnakorn Nimit said yesterday that the monk, Ajahn Montri Samujjo, was no longer at the Nonthaburi temple days after he won a THB18 million lottery prize, prompting people to flock there, disturbing the clergy every night and making it hard for anyone to sleep.

He said that people came from all over seeking the monk’s charity. The assistant said the 67-year-old monk had asked for permission to stay at an undisclosed temple in another province. They agreed.

“He went somewhere else. Please don’t come here again,” monk Sitthi Woradit said to people in a message delivered to reporters. “It’s disturbing the monks and causing chaos.”

Unaddressed was the fact that it’s actually forbidden for monks to buy lottery tickets at all.

    Goes without saying.
As are the ideals of supporting outside family with money accumulated [however attained].

Understanding that's today's Wat atmosphere is based on personal monetary profit from the assorted tamboons, free eats and whatnot.
It's am incoming deriving job, less a calling.

Recalling the good old days, when tamboon/ceremony offerings were of the sundry variety - not envelopes of cash.
Of the last generation [perhaps two] it's changed modes considerably.
...and the respective populations have long been conditioned in this manner - even looked down if one doesn't fill their ill-gotten purses.
