Super typhoon Rolly (int'l name Goni) in PI

Strong typhoon... strongest one in 2020 so far (worldwide)

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/weath...ippines-rolly/

Rolly intensifies into super typhoon, makes landfall in Catanduanes

    +++++

There's slight rain & winds in my area now (south of Manila) - it's the prelude to the big one. I expect the really strong rains & winds this afternoon or evening. Typhoon has made landfall & is still at the eastern part of Luzon island

According to the weather-guessers, who've been fairly accurate thus far, the rains will continue until early AM Monday. The worst of it, in Katie's and my area, looks to be later this afternoon. with the winds picking up and heavy rain. But, if they're accurate, it looks like we will be missed by the worst of it.

^I'm at my parents' house/ hometown now (not my apartment / work-town) - visited my mom for the weekend. I'm glad I'm with my mom, so we'll be going through this storm together (and I won't be worried for her safety).

The rains & winds are picking up now (here). I hope the typhoon won't cause too much damage. Typhoon Glenda in 2014 was strong too, and broke one of our glass windows. There was a town vehicle going around earlier, with loudspeaker, warning residents about the storm.

Hope you & yours are safe.

^thanks KW. I think topper's area is in the fringes, my area (and Davis') will be around the center/ centre. Still rainy & windy - the winds are quite cold!

Wife mentioned it. Said it was a #4 typhoon. The other recent one was a #3 and it was pretty bad

Yep, I'm way south, here we are in the outer rain bands, so it a few minutes of heavy rain, then a break, repeatedly since yesterday.

We were caught in a Cat5 tropical cyclone on the island of Tonga a few years ago - I think I posted pics - and unless one has experienced the mayhem, noise and uncertainty of when it will stop . . . frightening

^totally agree. You have to be there to experience it.

Update: the typhoon passed by my area around 4-7 pm yesterday. Some strong wind and rain, but thankfully the storm had weakened by then. By 8-9 pm, the rain had decreased to a slight drizzle. It's now leaving the country and out to sea. It didn't bring as much rain/ wind as Ondoy (2009), Yolanda/ Haiyan (2013) or Glenda (2014). Minimal damage to my area, but lots of damage in the eastern part of the country when it first made landfall. There was even some lahar flow from Mayon Volcano (lahar is volcanic mud that mixes with rain).

Lahar vid (thankfully not as bad as Mt Pinatubo lahar)

There's another storm in the vicinity, Siony (bad news). The good news is that it seems to be a weak storm.

Siony a bit weaker but may turn into severe tropical storm on Tuesday | Inquirer News

As we Filipinos say, it's more fun in the Phils!

Not too bad here either, other than an 18 hour power outage.

Yes. Broke in last week's typhoon. Got it back with repaired parts hours before this one hit. No water upstairs but other than not being able to use the water pump, it worked. Can't get new replacement parts until we can get to Manila.

^We had a brownout yesterday, but only 5-10 minutes, around 6 pm during the maximum intensity of winds.

Typhoon Quinta last weekend, Rolly this weekend and Siony later this week! It's more fun in PI!

It's a sunny day here, and we're doing the cleanup of the yard - fallen leaves & branches. Good times.

^yes, thankfully Siony won't be too strong of a storm & it's good that it's up in the north. The south of Luzon has been battered by 2 typhoons & the soil is wet, making it more prone to landslides. Bicol region (southeastern part Luzon) has been ravaged.

I'm back at my apartment / work-town - all seems to be well, thankfully. My work-town & hometown are in different towns but same province, hometown is farther away from Manila. I haven't left my province in ~8 months due to covid restrictions.

Typhoon Rolly made landfall 4x and with each landfall, it grew weaker. Thus, minimal damage in Metro Manila & surrounding provinces. But lots of devastation in the eastern part of the country.

    Vid from Manila Bulletin news:

Btw Davis, there's a YT vlogger/ expat in Lipa, chamnel is My PI Dream. He & wife live in Tierra Maria estates. I've watched some of his vids.
