BANGKOK (NNT) - The Department of Highways(DOH) is going to construct new rest areas along highways, following a design from South Korea in which the whole facility is built above the road. Construction is expected to be initiated by the end of 2021.

DOH Director-General Sarawut Songsiwilai said new rest areas will facilitate highway users as well as solve traffic congestion during festivals.

The department decided to use a South Korean design that is a 3-story facility built above the road, while either side of the road can be an extended parking lot.

The project will be funded by the private sector in a 30-year long PPP.

The first one will be constructed on motorway no.7 Bangkok-Chonburi-Pattaya-Map Ta Phut. The department’s plan has already drawn the interest of many companies.

The following one to be built is going to be on motorway no.9 Bang Pa-In - Korat and Bang Yai-Kanchanaburi. Each construction is expected to cost between 1 - 2 billion baht.
