As recently as 2018, the trash incinerator on Koh Samui had been inoperative and idle for 10 years. This resulted in a 250,000 ton pile of garbage awaiting disposal. A small amount went to overflowing landfill sites on the island.
Garbage was being shipped by sea to mainland disposal sites in Suratthani province.
Koh Samui had two incinerators working to dispose of 140 tons of trash every week, until April 2020, when an incinerator fire closed the system down again.
In the waters surrounding Koh Samui, locals discovered a 10kn long “island” of plastic waste. Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam, produce 60% of the worlds plastic waste. While global tourist morons like you continue to scoff and guffaw at such global issues, the problem will only continue to grow, along with mountains of garbage from your beloved full moon parties, held on an tiny island with no adequate waste disposal system, and no landfill.
Wake the fuck and accept some responsibility for your hedonism you pathetic, childish tosser.

My ‘Facts’ come from local media, and Thai nationals who grew up on Samui, Phangan and Koh Tao.

The most common drug at FMP is alcohol and cigarettes. It's Thailand. Sure some of the hardcore fuckups find some drugs but most ppl are just drunk.

Modern incinerators are expensive to install, and to operate because they have to fitted with specialized filters, and a mechanism to scrub any emission in order to prevent toxins being released into the atmosphere.
The basic idea, is to use the heat generated to provide an energy source for domestic and commercial use. This way, expensive incinerators can provide low cost electricity to homes and business, eventually negating the cost of purchase and installation/operation.

I have no information on the type of plant originally, or currently installed, but I think everyone is aware of the Thai propensity to cut corners, save money and use it for bribery and corruption.
The cause of the April incinerator Fire is still under investigation.
