Thailand bus crash: at least 17 killed in collision with train

Thailand bus crash: at least 17 killed in collision with train-12752638-16x9-xlarge-jpg

Officials say 65 people were on board the bus when it was hit by a train two hours east of Bangkok

At least 17 people were killed and more than dozen injured when a bus collided with a train in Thailand, officials said.

The bus passengers were on their way to a temple in Chachoengsao province for a ceremony to mark the end of Buddhist Lent and were about two hours east of the capital, Bangkok, when the accident occurred.

“The death toll we have so far is 17,” a district police chief said, adding that the crash happened around 8am local time.
Provincial governor Maitree Tritilanond told reporters that about 29 people were injured.

Early images by rescue workers showed gnarled metal and debris, with bodies lying by the train tracks and people’s belongings scattered.
The bus was overturned on its side, the top of it ripped off, and rescue workers said a crane was needed to lift it.
The number of casualties and injured is expected to rise.

The tour bus had 65 passengers on board when it crossed the railway track. Prathueng Yookassem, the district chief officer, told Thailand’s PBS TV that: “It was raining, perhaps the driver did not see the train.”

Cautionary signal lights and gates were probably nil and void, which is more common than not - even at busy/high traffic crossings.

Didn't look like there were barriers at this raised crossing, the bus drove up the ramp and straight onto it; didn't notice any warning lights, but that could be down to the video angle, and while there was some potentially obstructive foliage on approach, the vicinity of the crossing itself was clear.

Thai clusterfcuk, we will read about the next one in a week or a month, same same with different location and numbers dead, tut a bit, pay a few baht merit and all will be well.

My housekeeper is saying Thai news reports it was a "disco" bus, all were dancing and the music was blaring super loud. The driver could not hear the trains warning. Looking for the facts on this now..

    News report with video,

Elsewhere in the Thai TV media it was reported that it was very noisy on the bus with a DJ and loud music as the high spirited merit makers were enjoying their day.

Speculation was rife that the bus driver may not have heard the train's frantic whistle.

State Railway of Thailand governor Nirut Maneephan was on the scene and confirmed there was no barrier as that crossing was not registered.

Happen to come upon the event on video [phone or CCTV] as it occurred through Thai social media being circulated around.
Sure enough, there wasn't a signal gate/light and didn't appear that the driver was looking out whatsoever for cross-traffic, as the train just barreled into the coach a high speed - could have been worse than toppling the bus over on it's side.....kind of grim.

Right, just missed making it by a meter, but a long long meter in reality. Only in Thailand would people going to religious rites be having a disco party before 7am..

Hey guess what, can't imagine why but our glorious Transport Minister has ordered signals and barriers installed at all railway crossings.

Thai Transport Minister orders signals and barriers installed at all railway crossings - Thailand News - Thailand Visa Forum by Thai Visa | The Nation

Was he the same magnanimous leader that ordered ferries to carry a few life vests or pay a 500 bt fine if they sink and lose more than 20 souls?

A wonderfully vivid vignette illustrating the imbecility of these people. Their death certificates should give stupidity as cause of death.

A year or two ago a disco bus carrying a bunch of retards on a weekend management bonding trip drew up to their destination hotel near our condo. The noise was incredible but even though they were about to disembark the cretin running the trip kept his music thumping out at ear bleeding decibel levels. I phoned up the hotel management to tell the fuckr to turn his shit off but they were reluctant to do so because the coach was not employed by them!! Stupidest people on the planet.

Some of these rescue groups have their own social media pages - Twitter and Facebook - and regularly post photos of accidents and other stuff they deal with. One I've seen is very prolific. Hundreds and hundreds of photos.

    hard to argue with that.

hundreds of these ancient buses, which consist of recycled chassis and their patched up engines, fitted out with equally old and barely maintained steering and braking systems, and rebodied with paper thin coachwork perforated with vast expanses of artery slicing plate glass windows and painted to look like fairground rides hurtle up and down the country 24 hours a day piloted by amphetamine frazzled chickenheads, their dilated pupils struggling to make sense of what they can see through a greasy cracked windscreen already seriously obscured with stickers, dangling tinsel, ornaments, flashing neon buddhas and grinning michelin men, and whose only aim is to reach their destinations as quickly as possible with little though to either the comfort or safety of their passengers or even any other road user within 100 yards of these ridiculous smoke belching contraptions.

From the vid it looks like it's caught the front side of the bus just as it was crossing. Just imagine what it would have been like if it had been 2 seconds later and had hit the middle of the bus...

Railway warnings have been around for over 100 years. Approaching trains are a devil to see and not something drivers should be required to avoid by sight alone. Barriers were invented for a reason and the government can't hide behind the crossing not being registered...

i dont for one minute think the government are in the least bit bothered by these crashes, unless they are reported in the foreign press.

the only people who use either the railways or the interprovincial bus services are the poor who cant afford anything else or backpackers looking for a railway nostalgia fix and the opportunity to "go local" for a few hours and the govt. have made their position on the lower end of the travel market quite clear.

the illegal and unguarded crossings set up by lazy locals who cant be bothered to drive a mile or so to the guarded crossings will always be a problem until the tracks are securely fenced in, and that costs money and is reliant on local co operation.

between hua hin and cha am, a distance of about 30 kms, where the railway runs about a km back from and parallel to the main road there must be a dozen illegal crossings, most of them for motorcycles, but 2 or 3 are easy for cars to use too.

the ongoing construction of the high speed line from bkk to hua hin will block off these crossing places, but i'm sure the wily locals will find a way of opening up short cuts from their homes on one side of the tracks to the 7/11s on the other side.
