Taxi drivers in Bangkok can now charge handling fees for luggage

Bangkok taxis can now start charging passengers extra for large luggage items with handling fees ranging from 20 to 100 baht per item. Under the new regulations, taxi drivers are required to tell passengers about the extra costs before the ride.

Bags larger than 26 inches will be 20 baht and items larger than 50 inches will be no more than 100 baht. Other large items like sports equipment, bicycles, surfboards or musical instruments will be no more than 100 baht. After the first 2 items, additional bags will be 20 baht each.

The Transport Ministry says people will not be charged extra for handicap equipment like wheelchairs and walking sticks. Passengers will also not be charged extra for small personal belongings like handbags, computer cases or backpacks.

Actually I very much think they probably will.

taxi drivers are required to tell passengers about the extra costs before the ride.
    But not in detail.

bangkok taxi drivers have not had a fare raise for over 10 years, and this will provide some extra income for them.

there are decent taxi drivers out there who give good honest service and keep their cabs clean, and they deserve a rise. its not as if bangkok taxi fares are expensive.

those unhappy with the charges can always take the bus or walk.

Thai taxies are some of the least expensive of any country I have been too,
Why not charge you for handling luggage, their job is to drive you some place not to be your porter. And 100 bht, come on about $3 , big FN deal.

Was this like another one of those "crackdowns" then?

I expect it means just having it transported with you - nothing to do with who lifts it in and out

I really sometimes wonder whether some of you have even visited Thailand, let alone lived here. This is a fucking disaster. Yes, there are many decent taxi drivers out there. There is also a fuck off load of absolute shit heads.

We are now going to spend our time arguing whether our computer bag is "luggage" - whether shopping bags should be paid for. How about a small box? Is this luggage 25 cm (free), 26cm (20 baht) or 50 cm (100 baht).

Anyone who has lived here will KNOW there will be fuck heads trying to charge 100 baht per bag - whatever. Tourists are going to get ripped, and the rest of us involved in arguments with yaabaa'ed up fucking psychopaths convinced we are trying to take money from their pockets.

Yes. They may well need an increase in charges. Put up the flag down. Put up the fee per mile. Any fucking thing EXCEPT where we basically have to agree the tariff with the driver.

    agree with all of this.

a few years ago there was video of a taxi driver chasing somebody with a machete....that's going to seem quaint if/when this ridiculousness moves forward.

This is precisely the point. Given any opportunity to stiff the farang, many of them will.

I rather think your sojourn in sleepy hollow Hua Hin now superseded by your COVID sequestration in Grimthorpescarsfell has seen you removed somewhat from the zeitgeist that is metropolitan life here n LoS, Tax.

Taxi fares were raised last year, August.

To be fair, I can find lots of reports saying they were going to, but not one saying they had.

    Do you have one?

    here it is.

Under the new pricing structure, the flag fare of 35 baht for the first kilometre will remain unchanged. The fare per kilometre for the first 10km, however, will rise by 0.50 baht, while the traffic charge for a stationary taxi will increase from 2 baht to 3 baht per minute. From the 10th kilometre, the rise is 50 satang per km.

The airport taxi surcharge will also be increased, from 50 baht to 70 baht for regular taxis, and 90 baht for taxi vans.

For commuters, taxi fare hike is least of worries.
its three quarters of fuck all. a 5 baht increase for a 10 km ride. oh how the poor passengers are being ripped off.

the fares have hardly changed in 10 years, unlike the cost of living.

bkk has a decent public transport system, including soi buses, motorcycle taxis, grab etc. etc.
for those too tight arsed to pay a few baht extra for the convenience of putting their suitcases into a taxi there is no shortage of alternatives.

    s.a.

has seen you removed somewhat from the zeitgeist that is metropolitan life here n LoS, Tax.
well at least the british government aren't using water cannon, rubber bullets, (and live rounds apparently) and shooting people on the streets whose only crime is to protest at a military coup and the privilege and profligacy of you know who, and to the best of my knowledge protesters here aren't carted off to military prisons for "re education" using batons and batteries.

better keep your head down and your opinions to yourself in metropolitan los otherwise the zeitgeist might just give you a nasty surprise wouldnt you agree?

My latest experience with taxi's was 2 weeks ago in Korat.
I needed to get from the Ford dealers where they were working on my car to the Mall.
Taxi called jump in and off we go meter running so I thought no problems here arguing about the fare.
Arrive at the Mall the meter reads 92baht, 110 baht says the driver. WTF I ask what is going on here?
Business charge he says. I mutter something and give the money as I couldn't be bothered arguing about 20 baht.

So on the return journey I ask the cab driver "how much" he says 150 baht so I says too much and walk off.
Go to the tuk tuk driver and ask and he says the same but I eventually got him to agree to a fare of 100baht.
Off we go and when we get there I give him 140baht which was almost what he wanted from the start but I just hate being stuffed about with them thinking they can rip you off all the time. I am happy to pay and usually give extra but being told I have to pay an exorbitant price pisses me off.

It's Thailand, that's why I'm asking. Saying they are going to do something and actually doing it are two completely different things most of the time.

There's lots of articles saying prices WILL rise, but I can't find one fucker that says they HAVE.
