Former Muay Thai champion dies from poisonous centipede bite

A former Muay Thai champion known for throwing aggressive left punches and kicks died Wednesday in Kalasin province after he suffered complications from a bite thought to have come from a centipede.

Dokmaipa Por Pongsawang, 52, died at Kalasin Hospital of severe blood infection, according to hospital director Pramuan Thaingamsilp days after his daughter said he was bitten by a giant Thai centipede, or takhap.

Dokmaipa’s daughter Jiraporn Moonkaset told reporters that her father was bitten on his left leg. He didn’t seek medical treatment for the wound until he fell seriously ill, with chills and dizziness progressing into a full coma.

Pramuan said Dokmaipa had diabetes, causing more complications and contributing to his death.

Born Jamnien Moonkaset into a Muay Thai family in Roi Et province, Dokmaipa became a Muay Thai boxer when he was 9. A rare left-sided fighter with particularly strong left punches and kicks, he won six matches at the Lumpini and Ratchadamnoen boxing stadiums, earning the nickname “Powerful Southpaw.” He retired from fighting in 1996 and became a coach then bodyguard in Macau. He returned to Thailand and in recent years worked as a municipal employee back home in Kalasin.

His funeral will be held in his hometown, Roi Et’s Saelapoom district.

yesterday i came within a couple of feet of one [a big one] about 6 inches and as thick as your middle finger, came in to the kitchen, luckely the dog barked and warned me,he knew not to mess with it untill i gave it its last rights.plenty about during the rainy season, yesterday the pest control were due to come, but as it was raining that would have been no good.last month we had our yearly treatment and found 2 dead, we now have the garden sprayed every month.
a true thai muay-thai champion, not to mess with them.them that think they are a harmless centipede they are not, dont think it the same as the other one's that curl up when touched.
most thais are terrified of them.

Well, it appears to not have been gthe poison, but a blood infection.

Some spiders are like that and harbour bacteria in their mouths. The "flesh-eating" bacteria is one, causing Necrotizing Fasciitis.

Though I daresay the bite hurt a bit...

I have come across a few 10" plus long centipedes here around my house. They can be extremely aggressive and are lightening fast. I cut them in half with a shovel and they are still alive the next day. I have been stung once by a big black scorpion and while it hurt like hell I do have a great respect for those centipedes.

I got bitten on both feet by one last year when cutting grass
Felt it bite and kicked it off and it bit the other foot also!
Felt like both feet had been hit with a sledge hammer, soaked feet in iced water and cried for a few hours!
Took some anti-histamine, took days to be pain free!
Have a lot in the garden now as needs cutting, but too wet, I wear lace up shoes now when cutting grass

    Smart!

I have watched my FIL get stung, bit or squash his toes with things because he is always wearing flip flops in the yard working. I never go out in the yard without shoes on, ever. When digging around in rock and wood piles I always wear gloves. My Niece who lives with us on and off, went to grab a bag of dirt that we have stacked up on the side of our carpark area. She got lucky. a big black scorpion was there in-between the bags. I showed her and said NEVER pick up anything in piles or bags that have been sitting outside without gloves on. Scorpions, Centipedes and other insects or arachnids take up residency quickly.

Our dogs will nail snakes but leave these centipedes well alone... just just follow them around at a distance barking and waiting for me to sort it out (I don't kill them... they go over the wall into the dog-killer neighbour's garden).

A good friend of mine sent me a picture of her sisters leg after she was bitten by one on the foot and very nearly lost her leg. I won't post it as it's pretty graphic.

Treat these things with extreme respect!

You should always wear shoes on grass when there are scorpions in town.

I taught the saucepan how to catch scorpions properly when he was about 3 or 4. Better that than an inquisitive child just picking one up.

Getting killed by a centipede might be a big enough deal to mention on my tombstone. I don't really have any other cool stories.

Posting your repo comments in a news thread ?

Inappropriate, isn't it ? There is a special thread for this, which you well know.

Desperate for attention, are you ? This thread is not about you, KW.

Never been there HH... maybe next year you can take me?

I was once pulling down this old rotten wooden cover above an outside fan when two of these b@stards fell out and landed on my head and shoulders... I've never jumped off a ladder so fast in all me life. By some miracle I didn't get bitten and didn't break a leg. I'm a lot more careful these days.

Anyway, as I mentioned I was sent a couple of awful photos of a friend's sister after she was bitten on the ankle by one of these centipedes... nearly lost her leg. I don't want to post graphic pics... don't know what the convention is... but I stuck them in an album in case anyone is interested. Should serve as a good warning...

Definitely one to avoid if possible. I see a lot in my garden in the rain season too and this pic was taken in June.

This comes in third behind the banded krait and spitting cobra of creatures to be aware when you come for a visit....

They are horrible looking bastards aren't they.

    Imagine one a foot long.
