Phuket woman dies shortly after eating mangrove horseshoe crab

A 46 year old woman died after eating a horseshoe crab she caught in a mangrove forest near her home in Phuket’s Muang district. After eating the shellfish, Wanthana Phutcho vomited, complained of a headache and had trouble walking. She fell unconscious and died on the way to a hospital.

Some people have mistaken mangrove horseshoe crabs, which are poisonous, with Southeast Asian horseshoe crabs, which are commonly eaten in Thailand and sold at markets. In the past, the Ministry of Public Health warned that consuming the mangrove horseshoe crabs and their eggs can be life threatening. They say the plankton mangrove horseshoe crabs eat are poisonous to humans.

Wanthana collected molluscs at the nearby mangrove yesterday morning and caught 3 crabs, according to her mother, 64 year old Somjai Kingwongsa. When Wanthana got home, she grilled a horseshoe crab and ate it. Shortly after eating, she vomited and couldn’t walk steadily.

Somjai says they first went to the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation Hospital, but the staff advised her to take Wanthana to Vachira Phuket Hospital. But Wanthana got worse on the way and her mother called the emergency line. She was unconscious when the ambulance arrived and emergency responders gave her CPR, but she died soon after they arrived.

Doctors at the Vachira Phuket Hospital later examined the woman’s body and confirmed that the woman died from eating the poisonous crab meat.

Yeah, you'd expect the staff of a backwoods clinic to recognise the symptoms of Horseshoe Crab poisoning, wouldn't you?

Nope, but I’d expect the staff of a hospital to admit an obviously sick patient instead of telling her to go elsewhere.

Some things do still happen in Thailand that have feck all to do with tourists or their absence.

Also, when someone tells you to go to the big hospital.....

Ms Somjai first took her daughter home, where Ms Wanthana’s condition deteriorated quickly. She started turning green, prompting Ms Somjai to call the Narenthorn Emergency hotline 1669 for an ambulance.

By the time the ambulance had arrived, Ms Wanthana had already lost consciousness. Attempts to revive her failed, Ms Somjain explained today.

Has happened before. Also transferred to a bigger hospital, but they probably didn't piss about going back to their hotel first.

PHUKET: Seven Koreans were taken to hospital on November 3 with food poisoning after eating horseshoe crabs.
    Wednesday 9 November 2011, 05:44PM

The seven Koreans, named as Bohwa Choi, 29, Song Min Joo, 27, Lee Jung Sun, 29, Choi Jung Sun, 28, Eunjoo Kwak, 30, Joo Seung Hyo, 31 and Anh Yong Soo, 31, were all staying at the Baan Thai Hotel in Patong when they came down with bouts of vomiting and diarrhoea.

They were sent to Patong Hospital, then transferred to Phuket International Hospital to be treated.

Deputy Superintendent of Kathu Police Station, Pol Lt Col Kittipong Klykeaw, said the seven were on a tour and stopped for lunch at a seafood restaurant in Phang Nga Province.

There they tucked into a hearty feast of the prehistoric sea creatures. By evening all were ill. Treatment at Phuket International Hospital fairly quickly put them right.

I was enormously drunk with some women at a CM late night venue and thought it would be impressive to order "Crispy Fish Bowel".

I had an arse like a chinky liquidiser for a week.
