Only Maya Bay on Phi Phi Leh was closed due to on average 200 tour boats a day anchoring there with the subsequent damage caused to the coral reefs. Phi Phi Leh has no accommodation on it.

Phi Phi Don is the island with all the hotels and resorts on it and remains open though obviously with no tourists.

Sure, Phuket could do with a revamp. But with probably the most corrupt and entitled Provincial government in Thailand, the violent and connected taxi mafia, and the various other leaches that feed off the trough in Politics (southern democrats, anyone?) I will believe it when I see it.
