School sacks teacher caught assaulting kindergartners, offers legal help to parents

A school in Nonthaburi province on Friday apologised to the parents of kindergarten students who were subjected to physical abuse by a teacher.

Sarasas Witaed Ratchaphruek School has also offered legal assistance to the parents whose children were ill-treated by the teacher.

This week, a group of parents found their children unhappy about going to school and had wounds on their bodies. These incidents made them reach out to each other. On Thursday they approached the school authorities and suggested using a CCTV camera in the children’s classroom. The video showed the children being physically assaulted many times by a teacher, who was named as Onuma Ploadprong. The teacher reportedly banged the children's heads on their desks, pushed them to the ground, and twisted their ears until they screamed in pain. Other teachers too did not stop Onuma from abusing the children.

The school said Onuma was called for questioning and sacked after she confessed to her actions. The school said that it would punish other related persons as well. The school representatives and parents have filed a complaint at Ratchaphruek Police Station in Nonthaburi on September 24.

The school also informed the parents that it would facilitate prosecution of the teacher and other related persons by providing a legal team.

Blimey, that reaction from the school seems almost startlingly appropriate.

    Let's hope they follow though.

Staff That Watched Teacher Beat Children Face Legal Action

Today, The Office of the Private Education Commission (Opec) will ask executives at the privately-run Sarasas Witaed Ratchaphruek School to take legal action against staff members who watched a teacher beat young children and did nothing to stop it.

Opec Secretary-General Attapon Truektrong on Sunday raised questions about the school’s punishment for the teacher, saying a reprimand was not adequate.

He also said assistant teachers turning a blind eye to the incident was as bad as actually committing the offence themselves.

Mr Truektrong later said he was told the teacher had been fired.

He said the woman accused of beating the children had no teaching licence but the school hired her anyway.

Opec would also consider whether the school’s tuition was too expensive and whether its English programme for nursery students complied with regulations, Mr Truektrong said.

Tuition at Sarasas Withaed Ratchaphruek is reportedly over 100,000 baht per semester.

Last week, several videos were widely shared online showing different occasions on which a woman is seen assaulting kindergarten 1 pupils at the school.

Angry parents went to the school and confronted the woman in the videos, identified as Ornuma “Khru Jum” Plodprong, on 25th September.

She later filed a complaint with police against the parents.

School officials have met the parents and are providing legal assistance to families taking action against the accused teacher.

Parents have also lodged complaints against her with local police. Deputy Education Minister Kanokwan Wilawan will today meet parents of the students in Khru Jum’s case at the ministry.

Violence against children contravenes the constitution, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Early Childhood Development Act, said Prakairat Tonthirawong, a member of the National Human Rights Commission.

Ms Tonthirawong said the Ministry of Education should strive to prevent violence against students with appropriate methods such as training for teachers on developmental psychology.

A Facebook page called “Social Hunter. Reborn” reported that an elementary school teacher of the same school had hit students from her class with a long-handled dustpan.

They have to threaten this to make sure those at the top are motivated to do something, presumably.

Even in a case such as this it's necessary to threaten hitting them where it actually hurts.

As is so often the case, someone in China can trump this vile behaviour.

Chinese teacher sentenced to death for poisoning nursery children - BBC News

A Chinese court has sentenced a nursery teacher to death for poisoning 25 children, one of whom died.

Wang Yun was arrested last year after children at a kindergarten in Jiaozuo city were rushed to hospital after eating their morning porridge.

The court said she put sodium nitrite in the breakfast of her colleague's students for revenge after a fallout.

It described Ms Wang as "despicable and vicious"

I was with a mate when we picked up our kids from nursery, his daughter had a large and several small bruises along her arm, and naturally he was less then pleased about that, asked her about it and through tears and what seemed like fear she grudgingly pointed to a Thai teacher.

Lots of noise before he said he's calling the police, owner's wife immediately got on her phone, explained the situation to her farang husband and handed it over to him for a conversation that went like this, quote: "I'm really sorry about this and we're going to fire the teacher; how much do you want?"

Good for this school taking the matter seriously rather than trying to wash it away.

It shows how far the country has to go. At 'exhibition' schools, no less. Schools which set themselves up as models to follow.

That there are other equally backward countries around should be no consolation.

Thailand will never be at peace with itself until authority can respond to challenge using methods other than this.

3 More Sarasas Teachers Surrender To Police

Three more teachers from Sarasas Witaed Ratchaphruek School in Nonthaburi turned themselves into police on Wednesday and accepted charges of physically abusing their students.

Nonthaburi police chief Pol Maj Gen Paisal Wongwatcharamongkol only identified them as Ni, Waew and Wan.

He did not go into details about the abuse they allegedly committed, but they surrendered to police after being shown video recordings of them mistreating pupils.

So far, 16 teachers and teaching assistants in 10 Sarasas-affiliated schools have been accused of having physically abused students.

Pol Maj Gen Wongwatcharamongkol said the Sarasas Witaed Ratchaphruek School director will be summoned on 14th October to acknowledge charges that the school failed to recruit teachers with teaching licences.

The director sent someone yesterday to tell investigators that she was not ready to meet them as she was still gathering evidence and witnesses to counter the allegations, he said.

Police have received dozens of complaints against teachers and teaching assistants.

Meanwhile, Sarasas Witaed Ratchaphruek School denied it is suing parents of abused students and avoiding responsibility, after a sacked teacher filed a complaint against some parents.

The school’s management posted on its Facebook page on Tuesday that it neither wanted a dispute with parents nor denied any responsibility for its treatment of students.

The school says it is adhering to a deal made with the Education Ministry on 30th September, under which it will refund fees and pay for any physical or psychological treatment for abused students.

The good thing is that people who send their kids to these schools generally have deep pockets . . . the bad thing is that they generally have deep pockets. Good luck in following the 'suing' route as they'll find it goes both ways
