Tropical storm gathers speed, set to strike during weekend

The Thai Meteorological Department reported on Thursday (September 17) that tropical storm Noul, with sustained winds of 80 kilometres per hour, was expected intensify and make landfall between the cities of Hue and Da Nang in central Vietnam.

It will then hit the North and Northeast of Thailand over the weekend, and further strengthen with southwest monsoon winds across the Andaman Sea. Torrential rain and strong winds are expected to lash the Northeast, before moving on to the North, Central, East and South. People in risky areas have been warned of flash floods and runoffs, while generally the public has been told to avoid large trees and insecure buildings.

Bangkok prepares for Storm Noul disruptions

BANGKOK(NNT) - Tropical Storm Noul is expected to hit Thailand on 18-20 September, with torrential rains expected along the storm’s path.

Storm Noul is currently a category 3 tropical storm prevailing over the South China Sea 600 kilometers off Vietnam’s coast east of Da Nang. The storm is now moving with a windspeed of 80 kilometers per hour, and is expected to make landfall in Vietnam tonight and in the morning of 18th September.

The storm is then expected to move into Laos and the northeastern region of Thailand as a tropical storm, before it deescalates into a depression.

In Bangkok, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has deployed workers to excavate city drains and drain out water in canals to extend their capacity to handle the expected precipitation, especially at some 20 flood risk areas, such as Chaeng Watthana Road where flooding would immobilize the traffic.

The Governor of Bangkok, Pol Gen Aswin Kwanmuang said today that City Hall has coordinated with the district office and local authorities in Nonthaburi to prepare for the situation, in order to provide a swift remedy to the issue.

The Hydro-Informatics Institute (HII) has dispatched a caravan to Nakhon Ratchasima and Roi Et to help prepare the area for Tropical Storm Noul, and serve as a mobile command station for public assistance. The institute has been coordinating with the Thai Red Cross Society’s Friends of Pa Foundation to develop a situational response plan. The caravan today delivered royally bestowed disaster relief bags to villagers, as well as delivering food cooked from the mobile kitchen vehicle.

The HII has also dispatched a Mobile War Room vehicle in which officials will be monitoring the excess water situation; other equipment in the caravan will ensure the effectiveness of the surveillance and operations to help any affected villagers in good time.

I'll believe it after it happens. But we've had these predictions before and they never materialised

Surprising because not too far away from you in Nongbualamphu the workmen here gave up mid-morning when it rained heavily for a while. Since then it has been on and off, mainly on.

We've had loads of rain this year in our part of Korat, and it's been raining the last few days apparently.

My wife sent me this today... glad I put in a damp proof course for Anna and Vigo.

Still next to nothing apart from light rain here, nice and cool and breezy but need some volumetric rain, be lucky if we have had 2mm so far, can see by the level of pool!
The mountain between Nong Bua and Udon does seem to work to deflect rain away from us, though with this storm it should be coming from the east.

They did some work on the drains in that area last year in order to prevent flooding again. I'd be surprised if it actually worked but it would be great if they were actually successful.
