Thailand: All visitors will need insurance

BANGKOK, 15 September 2020: A consortium of 16 insurance companies in Thailand are now offering foreigners, who are eligible to travel to Thailand, the mandatory insurance cover valued at USD100,000.

Thailand’s Office of Insurance confirmed last week that it has set up a consortium of insurance companies offering Covid-19 insurance online as the country prepares to reopen its borders to travellers.

Once the country reopens all foreigners entering Thailand will need to buy Covid-19 insurance. But until the door reopens the scheme will make it easier for foreigners who are currently eligible to travel to Thailand to acquire the mandatory insurance cover online.

In addition to having insurance cover, travellers need to provide the nearest Thai embassy with a Fit to Fly Health Certificate and a negative RT-PCR swab test valid within 72 hours of the flight departing for Thailand. They are issued with a certificate of entry when they have fulfilled all the conditions and have a confirmed flight date. They must also have an appropriate visa that fits the approved category of travel. Tourist visas for leisure travel are not being issued.

The Covid-19 insurance policy covers both deaths due to the disease as well as medical expenses for those undergoing treatment.
In case of death caused by the Covid-19, the policy pays for funeral expenses and the repatriation of the corpse or ashes to the country of origin. The maximum payout is THB3.2 million.
For medical expenses linked to the treatment of Covid-19, including the period of hospitalisation (inpatient or outpatient), the maximum payout is THB3.2 million.

Foreigners who buy insurance cover as part of the requirements to fulfil conditions to travel to Thailand must pay the insurance premium according to the period of their stay from 30 days to a maximum of one year.

The premium is set against benchmarks that identify the Covid-19 risk in the country of origin; the lower the risk, the lower the premium.

Insurance premium cover starts at THB1,600 and can be as high as THB14,400 for low-risk countries. Foreigners from countries with moderate risk are likely to pay an insurance premium of between THB2,560 to THB23,040. If the traveller is from a high-risk country, the insurance premium could be as high as THB43,200.

Insurance companies participating in the scheme include:

Assets Insurance Co Ltd (Thailand); Chubb Insurance Company Limited ( Thailand ); Navakij Insurance Co Ltd; Pacific Cross Health Insurance, Thailand ) Falcon Insurance Co Ltd (Thailand ) East Insurance, Asia Insurance 1950; Bangkok Life Assurance Ltd; Thailand Life Insurance and Thailand Life Insurance.

“Development of an insurance policy that provides protection for foreigners entering Thailand supports government policy and will help restore the economy of the country,” said the OIC secretary-general.

Who benefits? The Thai mafia. And who suffers? The lowly Thais who work in the tourist industry.

Btw, who in their right mind would buy a plane ticket and pay for accommodation in advance and take the chance of losing it all with a health check 72 hours before flying?

    I'm looking elsewhere to travel.

Until they scrap the 14 day quarantine it matters not a jot.

Unless they fancy getting a few unemployed tourists, surely that isn't the quality they are aiming for now is it?

That's right .What are they thinking ?

Thailand does have a pretty solid industrial base. But they have a long long way to go. And tourism is going to be a big part of the economy for the forseeable future.

I wonder if they will snap back from this , once the damage really sets it. Like 6 months from now.

You should be covered - obviously check with them, my insurance company sent me - without my asking a "certificate of Insurance" stating I am covered for 1m USD for medically related services for CV19. At the end of the day it's no different than being covered for flu, traffic accidents would be far more likely and there is coverage.

I don't know about Blue Cross Blue Shield, but a mate who went to immigration asking if they pass the visa insurance requirement with a 16k (?) package that offers identical cover given from an 'accredited' (ie commission paying) firm charging something like 43k, was given a stern negative.

The insurance scam is less about glorious leader concerns over life cover and more about how much money the robbers can make.

The problem in justifying this filthy many grubbling exercise in fleecing foreigners is that areas of high infection rates change almost monthly and even weekly in some cases.

So, a business visitor, WP holder or spouse of a Thai national seeking entry on one day could pay a premium of more than the cost of their airfare but if they travelled later it would have been considerably less?

But what if I am a resident with a Thai spouse who travels to Belgium where infection rates are the lowest in Europe but visit Paris where the rates are at their highest?

Truly, they are the stupidest people on the planet and the greediest - probably some correlation there.

But really, what sort of fucking ratio of premium to cover is $1,200US to $100,000??? It's fucking ridiculous and clearly nothing more than a scam.

But the entire policy is utter shite and typical of their stupid avarice. Why the fuck should a farang resident in Thailand get an annual insurance cover for a specific disease simply because he left Thailand for a fucking holiday and returns, say, one month later but is not required to hold the same cover if he remains in situ?

Honestly, these people are total parasites feeding off us ad nauseam. Thousands of us have bought properties, pay taxes, support Thai families, pay for extended family members when they incur expenses they can ill afford, pay for education needs of such family members, etc., etc and this is how they treat us.

Christ, how I loathe these swine.

Clearly they're trying to reopen but don't know how, with many factors to weigh, so the country will end up victim to their control/moneygrubbing genes which appear to be having a fun time.

You've been threatening to leave since the sausages debacle, and I think you said earlier this year you were definitely out of here to take billet in another country. What in the name of fuck are you still doing in a country you hate so much? Not that you won't hate anywhere else in the world you go but nevertheless, the glaring question remains..

Well if its society and dictatorships are not tolerable, just fucking LEAVE! What's stopping you?? I'd be gone tomorrow and forever if I hated this place as much as you clearly do, there's no armed check-points turning people around between here and the Airport and there's flights out to all corners of the world every day even at this time did you know? You've never stop threatening to leave yet here you still are, a perpetually miserable cvnt who's highlight of the day is complaining about a country he hates, but won't leave. Any idea just how fucking pathetic that makes you (and your ilk of crusty old unkempt Poms in Pattaya) look?

Think about that as you eye the world up and scowl from over the top of your Tiger draft today...

Obviously, you dimwitted Antipodean, I remain because I have commitments, obligations and responsibilities. We were on course to alter the status quo but COVID has pretty much bolloxed things.

The problem with the expat exodus from Thailand that began post 2008 is that the remnants are mostly stupid, blue collar oiks and dull as ditchwater.

Thailand is no longer a worthy retirement destination, it has changed markedly and only attractive, it seems, to the frazzled, the geriatric lumpen and ocker Antipodeans.

And the plethora of whining fucking Poms, who through a combination of sheer stupidity and piss poor planning have put themselves into a corner they clearly can't back out of now or they'd be off to greener pastures in a shot. Which is a shame, those of us that are happy in Thailand would love to see them all fuck off to infest some other country as the economical migrants and cultural misfits they all are. But they just won't leave, as unhappy as they are there's always some bullshit excuse why they're still here

In my experience some Aussies vastly underestimate their own brethren's tendency to whinge.

When a whinger happens to be Australian they simply think of them as whingers ...suddenly nationality is no longer relevant.

Your question was a good one, though.

It's the same answer SA has been giving for years, and as the years pass it's becoming less and less convincing.

Being a racist remainer is no insurance against getting scammed in the land of smirks. Insulting your hosts obviously feels good after you have called others out on their choice of Asian residence.
Must be that unsold, unwanted condo hanging around your neck, that makes you such a petulant whingebag.

AS far as I can see most antipodeans have fucked off back to their ghastly units in Cooberkookaburradrongoarseville with the rest of the blue collar oiks that cluttered the place up. Certainly, the European community has shrunk markedly as of course has the Brit demographic. But you are right, it was stupid of me not to have foreseen the longterm consequences of the 2008 crash, the secession from the EU, the COVID pandemic, the gross overbuilding by the Thai and the devaluation of one's currency by 40% since 2008.

Only a fucking retard could be satisfied with life in current day Thailand with its increasingly egregious and larcenous government exploiting a supine and ignorant population united in their bovine docility.

Returning to square one and the question you can't bare to answer because there's only one answer that makes you look even more pathetic, what the fuck are you still doing here?

You posted of being totally outwitted by a 9.5k baht a month (before overtime) security guard at Gulliver's in June of 2014, and at that time you declared you were leaving Thailand after having "had enough of the monkeys here" . But 5+ years later and guess what, you're still here and still moaning and clearly can't see just how fucking retarded that really is! What the hell haven't you been able to settle up and sort out here that's stopped you leaving for over 5 years, are you posting from prison??! Despite the setbacks you list ranging from currency rates to Covid, which we all lived through too, I could be out of here in 48hrs and would be if suffering the intense misery you must wake up with every day. Just fucking GO already, then tell us all how bad it's in Benidorm or wherever it is you next decide to seek refuge and hate the locals.

Maybe, or maybe not. Let's see what Saturday 19th brings. If things are mishandled then the prospects for any inbound tourism could disappear completely.
