Win motorbike shootout in front of mall in Samut Prakan

Two groups of Win motorbikes had a shootout in front of a brand new mall in Samut Prakan Province on 8 September 2020. A Facebook Page named “Samut Prakan News v2” in Thai posted a short video at 18.00 that showed people running inside a market. The gun battle was between 2 groups of win motorbikes fighting over parking locations to set up a Win base. The mall is brand new in Bang Phli District and has been open for only a month. Instead of normal negotiation, the win drivers started shooting at each other. Locals shopping in a market located in front of the mall started running inside for shelter in fear that they would receive a bullet.

Police from Bang Kaeo Police Station went to inspect the location and found 7 shell casings on the road in front of the mall. The casings have been collected for evidence. The win motorbikes involved in the shootout all disappeared right after the incident. Luckily no one was injured in the incident but a vehicle recived a bullet, the owner went to file a report with the police. Locals who witnessed the shootout stated that the shooters were win motorbike drivers. There were 2 groups who wanted to secure a spot in front of the mall. Win drivers in Thailand are usually in groups parked at a Win station, the drivers in the station have the right to pick up customers in the area. Both groups are illegal win drivers meaning that they havent registered with officials.

The first win is an old group of drivers stationed across from the mall. The second group are new win drivers who set up a station on the same side of the mall, both groups are parked 50 meters apart. Locals state that the new group started shooting and the old group shot back. Officials have contacted the leader of both groups to bring all win drivers in for a meeting with police at the Bang Kaeo Police Station. The shooters will be prosecuted and the win stations must be registered properly.

One Samut Prakan shooter surrenders as police wait for other to show up

Police were alerted of a public shootout on Tuesday (September 8) outside a department store in Samut Prakan’s Bang Phli district, but the gunmen had disappeared by the time officers arrived.

All they found at the scene were eight bullet casings and bullet holes in a parked car. No deaths or injuries were reported.

On Wednesday morning, Somjet Pojaroen, 55, turned himself in along with a .22 revolver that he said was used in Tuesday’s shooting. Somjet said he used to work as an assistant village headman and now runs a motorcycle taxi business from outside the department store. He reportedly told police that the other shooter was Prayoon Hong-um, 47, who runs a motorbike taxi business in another area.

“One of Prayoon’s motorbike taxis was picking up a passenger in my area, so I stopped him and sent him away,” he said. “A few minutes later, Prayoon showed up with some 20 men and demanded an explanation. I saw he was armed with a gun, so I rushed to grab my gun from my backpack, when his group chased and fired at me. I had no choice but to fire back.” Somjet added that the two sides traded several shots, until Prayoon’s group left the scene possibly because they were out of ammunition.

“I decided to turn myself in to show that I was defending myself and have no intention to escape,” he said. As of press time, police had still not heard from Prayoon and were getting ready to seek an arrest warrant for him if he does not turn himself in.

Somjet, meanwhile, faces charges of possessing a gun without a licence and discharging firearms in public without a proper reason.

Reckon things might get a bit spicy in Thailand over the net few months, with many people getting increasingly short of money?

I for one applaud their dedication and desire to serve the people of Samut Prakan with their taxiing service.

On an unrelated note this is why I get them to drop me off on a different Soi in my village.

There was a big shoot-out/gang war between the 2 main Bkk ambulance services around 15-20 years ago (time goes fast).

Just quick look on googen and didn't see it, but there's still a bit o' argy bargy* since then.

*Argy bargy being Ambulance squads killing each other with clubs and guns.

Two others were also injured in a turf war involving clubs and handguns between two rival ambulance squads

BANGKOK, Thailand — One volunteer rescue worker died when rival ambulance squads brawled on the streets of Bangkok early Monday, officials said.
The incident started when an ambulance crew belonging to the Pai Rom Sai Foundation accused another from the Por Tek Tung Foundation of encroaching on its territory in responding to a traffic accident.

The Pai Rom Sai crew allegedly attacked the Por Tek Tung Foundation with clubs and handguns leaving one volunteer member dead and two others wounded.

Think of it as bandit gangs of motosai taxi drivers.

They created this app and shit to try and compete with Grab, although Grab have some kind of deal with them now I think.

Before win and before ride sharing apps.

Back in my day the motocai guys would wait at the bottom of the soi drinking cheap spirts and picking their noes, you had to wave them down with your hand.

Win is the thai word given to the queue of motorcycle taxis that line up at the mouths of many sois and outside shopping centres etc.

A motorcyclist has to be approved by the win leader before being allowed to join, family and tribal allegiances are strong within the wins and some of them operate as eyes and ears of the police, criminal and political groups.

There was an in depth sociological survey published a few years ago explaining their function in thai society, it is much more than a simple taxi service.

Nothing to do with an App or anything modern. That's their Thai name. Has been for decades.

Basically, think of them as a big, jungle, gang of low level minions that couldn't cheat or pay to pass the police entrance exam.

Essentially a redundant word then. Thai Motorsai taxi guy will cover it.

    Nothing's changed, then.

This Win got in a spot o bother for riding on the pavement, then beeping his horn at a pedestrian, then assaulting them for not getting out of his way.

the writing on the top of his shirt is 'Win Soi Lat Phrao 87 Junction 3'. Don't know the area myself, but the district is Khet Wang Thong Lang.

The victim may or may not be DJ Pat.
