I see it as this way - their country, their rules. If they say it's illegal to poke fish or corals, then obey. If it's prohibited to say something against the govt on social media, then shut your trap.

As backspin said (I don't agree with him most of the time, but I agree with him for this) - you are guests in their country. Follow the rules.

Whether it's non-poking of marine life, jumping through hoops for the visa, 90-day reports, etc. You are a foreigner, that's why you're staying there on a visa. You're not a citizen. They can revoke your visa anytime.

Reminds me of that Spanish national who went amok when confronted by the authorities here (in PI - in March or April). He resisted them, shouted at them, etc. Result: he was deported & declared persona non grata. I don't know his visa status (whether on permanent resident, tourist or retirement visa). He's married to a citizen and has a business, has a big house in a nice gated community, but he was still deported.

If you don't like the rules, you could always go back to your home country (US, UK, Germany, Sweden, etc) where the cost of living is higher.

    Peace... (OMG whinging farangs!) Lol.

Absolute bollocks. It is implicit that a rule of law should be proportionate and just, applicable to all and applied equally but here in the third world they simply make shit up and fuck people over because of some bullshit whim satisfying inherent racism and xenophobia. Accepting this in a supine, docile manner so typical of the indigenous downtrodden masses might appeal to you but to most right-thinking decent civilised people it is truly quite repellent. Are you normally this craven?

^That's in an ideal society, that all people are treated fairly and equally.

But many developing countries aren't exactly true democracies, my own included. I just accept it, make the most of it and live with it.

If you don't like the rules in TH, you could always leave.

What a childish, simplistic and somewhat crude philosophy.

Luckiliy, for those societies that have developed around the world nurturing the rise of institutions protecting the rights and freedoms of its citizens and those under itheir authority, they had folk who never failed to express their demand for basic human rights.

" Yo, yo farang, yo no likee, yo go, na!"

Christ, what pitiful people you are.

She simply gave her point of view. In return you came back with an overtly racist rant. Which sadly is par for the course for you. Most importantly in my opinion is that she is correct.

    Racist???

You seem to have reverted to your default mode wherein your thoughts and convictions are smelted in the crucible of stupidity.

    Carry on.

These 2 clowns should be kicked out for being stupid and opening a business in Thailand and blacklisted for a lifetime for being so dumb to open a business on Thai island.

Yep AO, typical SA behavior as well as Tax. Both have same piss poor demeanor. I have attempted in the past to respect their opinion but nowadays its nothing but vile nonsense and is long in the tooth and they spew that western "Civilized" countries respect and protect its citizens. They must live in a cave. Its utter BS. They see what they want to see.

Katie is 100% correct. Every country has laws and rules. While I may not agree with many of the laws here I didn't agree with many of the laws, regs and rules in the US either. But to avoid fines, arrest and unnecessary grief you comply or live with the consequences. Simple as that.

So these 2 guys made a mistake and a poor decision. Deporting them seems harsh HOWEVER none of us know how they behaved during the arrest. How many other "Selfies" they had doing other things etc. Additionally they were utterly stupid to post it on a social media platform as the perception set forth is that "Its OK to come and do whatever you want" and as business owner you are set to a higher standard. This deportation sends a pretty clear message.

This is a factor sassy consistently overlooks.

He just goes with any report, trusting that the reporter and the publisher search tirelessly for the truth and that there are no mis-translations.

So it seems the people providing the information can't be Thai, by his reckoning.

'Behave like a jerk = Bye Bye' seems fair enough to a lot of people, and we've witnessed just that happening. But maybe where sassy is he doesn't witness any uncouth behaviour by foreigners.

My dear fellow, one hopes you are not so dimwitted as to think for one moment that in classifying the West as a paragon of comparative virtue in relation to this ridiculous country I was including your own conflicted country struggling to emerge from its swamplands of bigoted ignorance and ghastly prejudice.

The point, seemingly cooling your no doubt balding, conical pate as it passes over you, is not the issue whereby the legislature creates its framework of regulation but rather it is the means by which it is enforced that is under question. In practical terms, foreigners here are made scapegoats for Thai laxity and are consistently sacrificed on the altar of hypocrisy to satisfy local prejudices.

You folk really are all a little bit, well, shall we say blue collar in your comprehension and analytical skills, yes?

Oh, and perhaps I should add that in referring to Katie23 as " you people " I was not implying any particular nationality, and certainly not Thai, but was merely suggesting she was among the less perspicacious among the board's membership, a group that seemingly comprises a majority.

Honestly, you folk really are a challenge. Certainly, it seems secondary education in the US is somewhat deficient.

wonder what you would say should the labour department decide that personally building your swimming pool and posting pictures of it on social media was in contravention of the remit of your work permit and decided to prosecute.

the laws in thailand are often used unfairly against foreigners and the poor and nearly always fot the benefit of the entitled and the privileged, to merely accept that without commenting is cowardice plain and simple.

students and activists are presently risking their lives and freedoms to bring about a fairer and more democratic society in thailand.

by your silence you are condoning it and aiding it. and that is exactly how the nazis and other despotic regimes came to power, by the cowardice of the population. perhaps you should restrict yourself to posting about your recipes and your jolly adventures on the hiking trails, and leave the politics to those brave enough to criticise, speak out and attempt to put an end to the racism and injustice in so many countries.

Hmmm So lets dive into that shall we you knucklehead? My swimming pool is built on the up and up and is in no violation of any law, rule or regulation. My posting on here is again is no violation of any law or regulation. My work permit has nothing to do with it. You simply are reaching to justify your stupidity and anger.

So, on the one hand, we have the argument that a protected marine area should be, well, protected, and on the other hand we have the counter argument, which, once you remove the personal attacks....

.... amounts to "everybody else is doing it, so why can't we?" Which, coincidentally, is the name of a Cranberries album.

I used that argument in primary school once. It didn't work.

Yeah, basically he's saying 'If something that could never possibly happen did happen...what would you do?'

Getting prosecuted for adding a swimming pool to your property? In Thailand? Or for posting about it on TD, the antisocial media?

Perhaps he played contact sports a lot when younger? Or headed a lot of footballs?

I must admit though, he doesn't really seem the type.

Maybe a googly reared up on him from a length?

you are forgetting about the thai neighbour, perhaps jealous of your house and success, maybe with some minor festering grudge against you for no valid reason, but a festering grudge nevertheless, with a brother in law in the police force, labour department or immigration department, and with a favour to call in perhaps.

then your work permit, or the law as it stands would be of no use to you whatsoever. you dont need to break laws in thailand to find yourself in court.

that, in all probability, is how the fish photographers were undone. some curtain twitcher with a grudge.

Are there curtains in the sea off Koh Tao?

Do the fish there have curtains?

    Are they net curtains?

We never had them in my school.
