600 facing quarantine after Thailands first locally-acquired COVID infection for 100

Almost 600 people have been found to have been in close physical contact with a COVID-19 infected DJ, with 78 of them classified being in the “high risk” group, as Thailand recorded four new COVID-19 cases today (Friday), including the first locally transmitted infection in over 3 months.

According to the CCSA, that infection is of a 37-year old Thai man, working as a DJ, who tested positive for COVID-19 on September 2nd as he was remanded in custody in the rehabilitation centre of Bangkok Special Prison.

Health officials have traced the DJ’s movements back to August 12th and found 589 low risk contacts and 78 at the high risk level. 34 others are pending investigation.

Six of the DJ’s family members have been classified as high risk, but five of them have tested negative, with his mother’s test result expected today. All have been placed in quarantine.

Only one high-risk contact, a friend of the DJ, has been found at the “Three Days Two Nights” restaurant, where they worked together. He has been isolated and will be monitored for 14 days, as the search continues for more contacts.

Altogether, 492 contacts have been found at the Criminal Court, including 14 high-risk cases. Screenings on September 3rd, of 146 low risk people and 10 in the high-risk group, have cleared them of infection, but all have been placed in home quarantine for 14 days.

At the rehabilitation centre, where the infected DJ was detained before his admission to hospital, 40 officials were in contact with the infected man, including 13 classified as high risk. Retesting is scheduled for September 8th and 16th.

36 people at the detention facility were classified as being at high risk, but tests on September 2nd cleared them of any infection. They are also to be tested again on September 8th and 16th and have been isolated from the main prison population.

At the Bangkok Special Prison, eight high-risk prisoners have been identified. They have undergone tests, with results pending.

The three other new infections are Thais returning from the United States, Singapore and Saudi Arabia.

Cumulative infections in Thailand, to date, are 3,431 with 3,277 recoveries and 96 others still in hospital. The death toll remains at 58.

Nonthaburi orders three-day closure of restaurant where new Covid-19 patient worked

Nonthaburi Governor Sujin Chaichumsak has ordered the closure of the "Sam Wan Song Kuen" (three days, two nights) restaurant on Rama V Road for three days after it became known that a man, who has tested positive for Covid-19, used to work there.

The man is currently in detention over drug charges in the Central Special Correctional Institution. He worked at two branches of the restaurant from August 12-25.

The governor held an urgent meeting with the province's contagion disease control centre officials on Friday as the new Covid-19 patient previously lived in a condo in Bangkok’s Bang Mod area and worked as a DJ in the Rama III and Rama V areas before being caught.

"To contain the spread of Covid-19, which can cost people their health, lives and properties, we have ordered closure of the restaurant from September 4 to 6," he said.

The meeting also ordered employees in the restaurant to undergo 14 days state quarantine, while ordering employees' families and relatives to undergo self-quarantine in their houses.

"Customers who used service at the restaurant from August 20 must monitor their symptoms. If they have any doubts, they must take a Covid-19 test at Bang Kruai 2 Hospital immediately," he added.

Infected DJ’s work places failed to maintain basic anti-COVID measures

The three work places of the DJ, who is Thailand’s first locally transmitted COVID-19 case in more than 100 days, did not observe the basic preventive requirements of temperature screening, the wearing face of masks and social distancing and offered a “glass sharing” special menu, according to an investigative report by the CCSA.

The number of people in close contact with the infected DJ,traced by health investigators, has increased to 970, with 119 of them classified as being at high risk. 516 have been tested and 513 have been cleared of the virus, with the results of the remaining three still pending.

The Criminal Court, which the infected DJ visited, has the highest number of contacts, totaling 492, with 14 being listed as being at high-risk.

Meanwhile, Thailand today recorded one new COVID-19 case among returnees in state quarantine.

According to the CCSA, the new case is a 27-year old Thai office worker, who arrived in Thailand from India on September 1st, on the same flight as another passenger who was earlier found to be infected with the virus. He took the first test on September 5th, which showed a positive result, but without symptoms.

The new infection brings cumulative infections in Thailand, to date, to 3,445, with 3,281 recoveries and 58 deaths.

Surely the key question here is: Who infected the DJ?
