Officials to gather evidence related to inappropriate posts

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Digital Economy and Society (DES) Minister, Buddhipongse Punnakanta, has ordered officials to gather evidence related to inappropriate comments on social media and submit them to the court for consideration.

Mr. Buddhipongse yesterday (Aug 12) posted a message on a Facebook page, saying that following a recent protest, inappropriate comments posted on social media had caused emotional distress to Thai people. The officials are gathering relevant information and comments, which are considered illegal, posted on August 10 and 11. An online investigation shows that there are 114 Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) with illegal content.

The evidence was to be submitted to the court today. If the court issues an order, it will be forwarded to the three platforms within 15 days. They will be told to remove the messages or shut them down. If no action is taken, each platform is liable to a fine of up to 200,000 baht and 5,000 baht for each URL per day, which is in accordance with Section 27 of the Computer Crime Act.

The DES Minister said he would like to thank members of the public for providing information to the authorities. The general public can provide more information and evidence via m.me/DESMonitor and DESMonitor’s Facebook page around the clock.

The Spokesman to the Ministry of Defense, Lt. Gen. Kongcheep Tantrawanich, said today the security sector is concerned about the protest situation, as the protesters’ demands involve issues that are considered sensitive and can create disunity among people. Their demands go beyond the normal scope by involving the institution that unites all Thai people. Everyone has the right to gather and express their views, but they must be within the legal framework. At the same time, it is everyone’s duty to protect the country’s main institution, follow the law and refrain from activities that may create disunity and hatred among the people.

However, the security sector believes the views and opinions expressed by school and university students are pure, and part of social development that has been passed down from generation to generation. The security sector is confident that all Thai people are firm and exercise good discretion, and that they will not become a political tool of any political group.

What a creepy little third world dictatorship this place has become as it scraps the barrel of Orwellian persecution.

It's only an Internet forum SA, no need to take it so seriously.

I wonder what the demographic is of the people doing the reporting. My guess, employees of the current government.

We're safe here, the emotionally stressful posts are aimed at foreigners.

Apologias to all our Thai nationals members.

Another incidence of a government taking away the need for its citizens to hone their own ability to judge truth vs untruth, a really important skill.
