The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) invites people and tourists to embark on a historic train ride by steam locomotives on Mother’s Day (August 12) from Bangkok to Chachoengsao province.
Ticket reservation starts on Saturday.
“The campaign aims to celebrate National Mother’s Day and the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother of Thailand, as well as to commemorate her royal projects that have been helping Thai people in remote areas,” Monthakarn Sriwilat, SRT’s acting public relations director, said on Saturday.
“SRT will use Pacific steam locomotives No. 824 and No. 850, which were built just after World War II by Nippon Sharyo Company, and are normally kept and maintained at Thonburi Locomotive Depot, also known as Bangkok Noi Train Station.
“The ride will start at Bangkok Station [Hua Lamphong] at 8.10am and arrive at Chachoengsao Station at 9.50am, where passengers will be given six hours to visit attractions in Chachoengsao province, before the train will depart for Bangkok at 4.30pm and arrive at Hua Lamphong at 6.10pm,” she added.
“Trains will also stop at Makkasan, Klongton and Hua Mark stations in Bangkok, to pick up passengers who do not want to come down to Hua Lamphong.”
Monthakarn added that each year SRT will organise historic train rides by steam locomotives on six important days, but due to the Covid-19 situation August 12 will be the first historic train ride this year.
The six important days are:
March 26: SRT Founder’s Day, route Bangkok-Ayutthaya
June 6: HM Queen Suthida’s birthday, route Bangkok-Nakhon Pathom July 28: HM King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s birthday, route Bangkok-Ayutthaya
