Stranded Ukrainian jumps to his death in Surat Thani

The body of a 49-year-old Ukrainian national was found outside an abandoned hotel in Surat Thani downtown on Thursday (July 30), and it is believed he committed suicide by jumping off the roof.

Officials identified the body to be that of Ukraine-national Tomak Myokola, and also found a brown backpack, a grey long-sleeved jacket and two empty bottles of beer on the hotel’s roof. The backpack contained a hotel room key, seasoning sauce and a motorcycle key.

Police believe the tourist was possibly stressed by Covid-19 restrictions blocking him from returning home, so he decided to break into the abandoned building, drink beer on the roof before jumping to this death.

Officers will go to the hotel where the man was staying and check CCTV footage for further information.

If he was broke it could be the last dregs of what he was living on; in my rebellious phase the tribe could live for days on mustard and ketchup sandwiches, if someone could afford bread.

    Or a bit eccentric.

The fact that the Ukraine is open and Thailand isn't stopping people leaving suggests he was broke and couldn't afford the flight.

Lots of people in the position of unable to afford the flight home and not being able to stay. must be very stressful.

I have come across a lot of foreigners in bali who have stayed to avoid the pandemic, and have spent all their money and now cannot afford to return. now looking for free visa renewals from immigration so they can carry on subsisting, they are part of the collateral damage of the pandemc.

I was reading about a South African teacher in Siem Reap, schools closed so she can't get a job, no flights out so she can't get home.

They've taken her into custody for overstay. Probably done her a favour.
