Thai student in Egypt dies after contracting Covid-19

A Thai student in Egypt has succumbed to Covid-19, the Royal Thai Embassy in Cairo revealed today (July 29).

An official statement published on the embassy’s Facebook page said that on July 24 the embassy was informed that a Thai student aged 26, from Al-Azhar University, was seriously ill and admitted to hospital.

Yesterday, the hospital notified the embassy that the student passed away.

The embassy has urged stranded Thais in that country to remain calm.

Between July 27 and 29, the embassy screened 290 Thai passengers and 35 other reserve passengers for Covid-19. The 290 were set to take a Cairo-Bangkok flight back home. Six did not pass the screening and a responsible organisation was called in to take care of them while the embassy was temporarily closed for sanitisation.

To be honest, Thailand is not doing that well in repatriation. I just today got one of my staff back from UK. She was on the waiting list for repatriation for 6 to 8 weeks. She is now quarrantined in a Thai hotel under government supervision, which will include at least 2 covid-19 tests. But she should have been back weeks ago. There must be loads of Thai airways planes sitting idle, loads of hotels with no customers. You would have thought something could have been worked out.

Well, the economic impact. However, considering these facts. Covid-19 is affecting 213 countries.
WORLDWIDE: 6,924,479 cases and 664,226 deaths.
THAILAND: 3,297 cases and 58 deaths.

Now, along with the loads of idle airplanes and empty hotel rooms, Thailand has empty hospital rooms and ICU beds.

You could say something has been worked out. Thailand has managed, at least to date, to dodge a very serious bullet, the Covid Pandemic. No names mentioned but there are a few countries who had decided to work something out if favor of the economy - it appears to come with a steep, steep medical price.

The numbers speak for themselves - six solid months into the Covid Pandemic and Thailand, although it may seem very restrictive to some, has managed to avoid serious medical damage that many, many countries have weathered and are continuing to suffer.

Can't have it both ways... is Thailand erring too far on the side of caution?, or is Thailand protecting its people?

Sorry to sound pessimistic, but the integrity of reported Thai infections comes into question, having as of about a week ago conducted a mere 600k tests with an unknown number of defective kits. Quite simply if you don't test, and with reliable kits, you will not know how many people are walking around infecting others.

While I agree Thailand seems to have done well, it remains to be seen if that is a matter of fact or if face has been injected into the equation.

So until we know what the true counts are, which is likely never, our only option is to trust the gov and hope it can be trusted just this once.

Juries out on that. Considering the factual data that 70-80% of infected persons are asymptomatic. How do you Protect resident Thai Citizens from repatriated Thai citizens?

Are the Thai governments implemented protocols too stringent? Possibly.

But, who makes the decision. Can we denigrate the shot caller when the success of preventing a rampant Covid Pandemic at the cost of business and economic success? What if, someone else's life is in your hands, how would you decide?

Do you risk the lives of untold numbers of citizens to support the damaged economies?

Tough call. No real answers - how do you measure success in this equation?

My belief is the numbers are correct. In todays day and age where just about every walking human has a smart phone - if the hospitals were seeing Covid cases we would know it.

Could the Thai government manipulate numbers reported, certainly. But, look at the other countries. When this virus gets out there, it runs far and wide. If Covid made inroads into Thailands residential population I do believe we would know it.
