Japanese Restaurant Owner Fined 50,000 Baht for Beer Buffet

    Khao Sod English

CHIANG MAI — A chef and owner of a Japanese restaurant in Chiang Mai City said he wasn’t aware that serving ‘beer buffet’ is illegal until he was fined 50,000 baht yesterday.

Speaking on the phone Wednesday, Sarawut Jinnakaew, owner of Ai Tomoe restaurant, said public health officials and police visited his restaurant on Tuesday after someone alerted the authorities. It was the latest crackdown on actions seen as “encouraging” others to drink, as prohibited by the draconian alcohol law.

The alcohol regulation law bans any action deemed to “encourage” others to drink, whether they are “Happy Hour” and alcohol buffet promotions, discounts, or even photos of booze on social media.

    I see.

How does 'Alcohol buffet' work exactly.
And aren't all those tiger beer girls kind of encouraging people to drink?

No idea regarding the beer buffet unless it is all you can drink for a set price for a set time. There was an upstairs bar that used to offer this in Nana Plaza. People getting totally rat arsed for 100 baht or so. Fights galore if I rememebr correctly.

As for the Tiger Beer girls, again I can't say for Tiger but Chang, Singha & Leo for instance get around it all as they also offer their own brand of water which has the same logos/marketing I believe.

Well if its anything like chinky buffets i have witnessed in the UK then you get a set amount of time to have your fill - you'll collect your glass which is small and visit the pour your own line of drinks. The professional will take 4 straws, collect 8 glasses and pour slowly whilst deploying the straws into said glasses being filled and suck like a vacuum keeping pace with the fill rate. The real professionals will be seen with a rucksack strapped to their back and a bagpipe affair under one arm with slim hose deployed, this is the manual pump used to fill the camelback in the rucksack - a proper Magaluf old timer could get through and liberate 2 gallons in an hour i'd imagine.

    I see.
    From the link:
BANGKOK — An admin who ran a Facebook page educating Thais on different types of craft beer said he was surprised health officials demanded a fine of 50,000 baht for “advertising” alcohol on social media. Officials told him they received a tip-off from someone.
Artid, the admin of “Daeg Beer Hai Plea Kaem,” said he was never paid for the beer reviews he wrote, but investigators insisted on sending him to court for breaching a notorious law that criminalizes any gesture that “advertises” alcohol or “induces” others to drink, including photos of booze on social media.
He is one of the bloggers and Facebook users caught in a recent trend of snitches reporting photos of alcohol to the authorities in exchange with a reward money of 7,500 baht.
“This law is incentivizing people to snitch and turn others in. If I spent all my days screenshotting and snitching I would be rich too,” the admin said. “My friend was also fined because one of their Facebook friends snitched to the Ministry. We can’t even trust people in our friends’ lists.”

Bad Burger on Sukhumvit did an all you can drink in one/two hours deal.

Can't remember the price/time details. It was craft beer so it was expensive, was worth it if you had the capacity and appreciate beer that isn't yellow coloured water.
