    Thailand "considering" visa amnesty extension

Today the government’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration has briefly addressed the issue of the current visa amnesty, which is due to finish on July 31. The issue was mentioned today as part of the daily briefings.

The visa amnesty was announced, then extended, in April to allow foreigners with lapsed visas, to stay in the country without having to visit an immigration office or prepare new paperwork, until the end of July. There has been a lot of speculation in the past few weeks but no official comment from the government.

At today’s briefing of the CCSA the spokesperson, Natapanu Nopakun said that a third proposal of an extension for visa amnesty “is being drafted and reviewed by relevant agencies”. He also announced that people should… “stay tuned for further announcements from Thai Immigration in the very near future”.

The comment mentioned a ‘proposal’ and is no guarantee that the current visa amnesty will be extended again. Nopakun made no additional comments if there would be any conditions or requirements regarding the proposed extension. The Thaiger would continue to urge anyone currently in Thailand, without a current visa, to examine their options just in case an extension is not announced

It is not just a rumor, it's clear, people can stay and apply for a visa until end of september, but then, if they do nothing, they will be on overstay.
It was so clear from the start that it would be the only possible solution.
400000 foreigners in Thailand and 10 planes / day, no need to be rocket scientist to understand this !

Well they do tell people to get their arses down to immigration and sort something out.

I think there are a few people that were hoping to cling on until it blew over, but it looks like many people are going to have to bite the bullet and go home.

They have essentially said that you must prove you can't leave.

It's going to be a fucking nightmare and quite a lot of "officials" are going to see it as an opportunity to line their pockets methinks.

The only variable in this situation is the IO's bank balance.

one reason why i have done my 90day reports, you just cant trust immigration that we are long term expats and not tourists who have no option but to sit it out.
since the lockdown immigration in korat has been fully manned and not a mention that WE dont have to do our reports, only what has been implemented for foreigners that cant return home.
what they say doesnt mean what they think.

Thanks for that, I have my paperwork ready for retirement extension due next month which I intended to do next week, to avoid the madness if they didn't extend the amnesty.

Might pop by anyway for my 90-day, nothing lost if they're still closed.

"Foreign visitors still stranded in the kingdom by the Covid-19 pandemic will be allowed to apply for an extended short stay after their visas expire on July 31, the Immigration Bureau chief said on Friday.

Foreign tourists who are unable to leave Thailand would be given a grace period from Aug 1 to Sept 26 to apply to stay for a specified period, said Pol Lt Gen Sompong Chingduang, the bureau commissioner. However, if they do not obtain extensions and are still in the country after Sept 26, they would face legal action and be blacklisted.

"He said the Interior Ministry's visa relief measures for foreign visitors would be submitted to the cabinet for approval next Tuesday. The bureau would later issue guidelines on how to apply for a visa extension."

Foreigners can apply for visa extensions after July 31

It's reported the IO, will possibly, accept an application for a VISA after July 31st. Presumably utilising the previous requirements, or maybe not.

Their, will possibly be, a grace period to normalise ones stay in Thailand, until Sept 26.

Their, will possibly be, legal actions as per normal overstay, if one is found without a valid visa after Sept 26.

The Thai cabinet, will possibly decide and publish them, next Tuesday 21st July the actual relief measures for foreign visitors.

It will, possibly be, OK to stay in Thailand until Sept 26, if one does not intend to stay after that date.

I am presuming one's current visa is null and void, due to not being able to renew it or failing to exit the country, during the "covid-19 relief measures" many accepted.

But if the land borders reopen and a border run, to extend ones permission to stay until ones existing visa expires, is sufficient, some may be able to choose that route.

I suggest waiting until next Tuesday prior to visiting your IO. As the TIO will have no new edicts to work with.

Hmmmm published yesterday but nothing in the Post.

BANGKOK — The Cabinet on Tuesday said it extended the amnesty for foreigners’ stay in Thailand amid the global coronavirus outbreak for a second time.

The automatic extension of stay in the Kingdom, which was to expire on July 31, is now renewed until Sep. 26, according to government spokeswoman Traisuree Taisaranakul.

The mandatory 90-day reporting for foreigners residing in Thailand is also suspended, she said. The announcement was later
published in the Cabinet minutes released by the government.

Officials said the measure will help travelers who found themselves stranded in Thailand due to travel restrictions brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.

Under the visa amnesty, the foreigners will not have to queue up at immigration to report their residency or extend their stay in the country.

Only choice this fucked up gov has. Until they get flights coming into the country without all the nonsense requirements to allow entry, they will have to continue kicking the extension can down the road. Surrounded by stupidity we be.

Could you be more specific about the 'stupidity' you see please.

ALL the evidence so far points to unfettered entry being a bad idea.

Tough? Yes. Regrettable? Most certainly. But stupid?

    Health insurance that covers covid.
Med Cert showing you are virus free.
Quarantine at a gov approved hotel.

And that's only for those few cases allowed to enter the country.

I was at Immigration up in the sticks this morning. Looked like a full set of officers were present. In fact I have never seen so many.

I was not the only customer..

I was met at the door to the office. I was asked what I needed. My documents were taken from me and I was asked to take a seat outside.
A couple of times someone came out to ask me to sign various papers and eventually my passport was returned to me.
    All very efficient and professional.

If only it could be like this every time
