Nearly one-third of tourism-related businesses 'may shut down permanently'

About one-third of tourism business operators in Thailand will run out of liquidity to keep their businesses afloat in the second half of 2020, Tourism Council of Thailand president Chairat Trirattanajarasporn has warned.

“The impact of Covid-19 will become most serious in the third quarter this year after many operators had tried to cut costs by letting some of their employees go, but after more than a million positions cut the situation still hasn’t improved, as no foreign tourists are allowed into the country yet,” he said.

“The council estimates that in the next three months up to 30 per cent of tourism-related businesses in Thailand are at risk of shutting down permanently.”

Chairat added that some operators are starting to sell their establishments, such as hotels, resorts, restaurants and gift shops to investors who wish to turn them into other business. “However, since the real estate business is also affected by the economic crisis, the hope of selling their properties is still bleak for these owners,” he added.

“The council had a meeting with Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha on Friday (July 10) and proposed five measures to help tourism business operators,” said Chairat.

“These measures are: providing soft loans to tourism entrepreneurs; considering moving the schedule up to open the country to foreign tourists under a practice similar to the travel bubble scheme; offering discount on electricity bills, one of the main costs of hotel operators; having the Social Security Office extend the compensation payment to temporarily unemployed staff from June to December, and reducing the employer’s contribution to Social Security Fund from 4 per cent to 1 per cent.”

Chairat also added that the Tourism Council of Thailand has predicted the income from foreign tourists in 2020 will drop significantly from Bt2.2 trillion last year to only around Bt600 billion.

Many farang-type establishments won't be reopening, some landlords gave discounts through the lockdown but it seems not enough to keep the owners interested, while some in Central Pattaya didn't care a toss, can't think ahead and will have empty premises as a result.

I don't think it's fully impacted just yet, people are moving around and trying to be optimistic, but reality should dawn when it becomes clear that Thai virus figures, which look impressive, are low because testing has throughout been low and it's beginning to appear with a troubling number of defective kits.

Hope I'm wrong, but don't think we've seen the end of lockdowns, or hardship.

^apparently there has been no reported case of local transmission in thailand for 40 days. I do tend to believe it, was looking today and monthly mortality rates are actually down at the moment. To be fair, Thais are pretty on the ball with regards to infectious disease control.

I had a discussion with a number of bar owners today and the word is that a lot of people who rented properties on the bright-side will move across Sukhumvit and set up on the Dark-side.

Far cheaper rents, more long term farangs who still have money and everything that one needs without the traffic hassle.

Maybe then they can bulldoze the shithole and move forward as they have been planning to do so for the last 20 years.

^Unfortunate thing is mate, over time as they migrate over from the shithole the Dark-side will just become the shithole.

^ Heaps of room, fresh air and no tourists.

Most people I know have families, houses and proper jobs which maintains their sanity.

I really believe the Dark-side will prosper and Pattaya City will explode.

Pattaya and Thailand, are now becoming a thing of the past, many are looking to other countries that are farang friendly.

And the UK, Aus and USA clearly is not.

Many posters are still having a hard time coming to terms with this and giving credit where it’s due.

So you base your opinion on two forum polls taken from Thaivisa, one from a thread on Thaivisa and the other from the Thaivisa Facebook page.

Are you kidding me? I thought you were going to link to some sort of in-depth study on the subject.

I know plenty who have left, plenty who have stayed, and I know plenty who will be back once they have strengthened their positions to give them better long term viability living there and yes, the Thai government doesn't particularly want foreigners marrying Thai and living there, the raft of changes to visa/extension rules that they are preparing will see many off once introduced.

I have to say, not dodging caravans of buses packed with tourists has been extremely nice, albeit bad for the tourism sector here. My wife and I have also enjoyed going to a few nice resorts for low cost and no crowds.

You always do, don't you. Whether it's BLM and the black girlfriends you've had who support your bigoted views, US servicemen who conveniently support your bizarre opinions over those who have actually served here, 'loads' of expats who have left Thailand - luckily supporting your opinion that Thailand is fucked.

    Seriously, grow up
