Thai schools told they cannot arbitrarily cut student hair

Thailand’s Ministry of Education has issued a letter, to all schools under its jurisdiction, to abrogate the 1975 regulations, regarding their students’ hair style and length, and to forbid the arbitrary cutting of students’ hair at school.

Education Permanent Secretary Mr. Prasert Boonruang, who also serves as the spokesman for the Education Ministry, said that schools which still enforce the 1975 regulation must adopt the 2005 regulation, which states that punitive actions against rogue students include warnings, probation, behavioural score deduction and performing social activities.

Commenting on a case earlier this week, which occurred at a high school in the northeastern province of Si Sa Ket, in which a girl student was forced to have her hair cut in front of other students during the flag-raising ritual, Mr. Prasert said that the school administrator had exceeded his remit.

The student’s mother was so upset over the forced haircut, which she described as a deliberate attempt to shame the girl in front of her peers, she threatened to move her daughter to another school.

The incident, which was posted on social media, has drawn widespread criticism of the school administration’s behaviour.

Mr. Chuchart Kaewnok, director of the provincial education office, has reportedly asked the girl’s mother to delay moving her daughter to another school, while officials try to resolve the problem.

It was weird, usually the beginning of term with older boys, a Thai teacher would walk along the seated line of students and occasionally grab a handful of hair and cut it off. Then hand the cut hair to the offender, who always turned up next day with very short hair.

I never saw anyone clip a girl's hair although I did once witness a Thai teacher after the flag ceremony make a standing girl student bend over amongst other students then whack her three times on the bum with a length of blue plastic pipe.

Amazingly versatile stuff, the blue plastic pipe.

    I worked at mathayom schools....

I worked at a school in Samut Prakan where I had the pleasure of doing gate duty once a week and got to witness this first hand.

About once a month, the school would bring in trainee barbers who would set up while the students were arriving. A Thai teacher would inspect each boy as he arrived and if his hair was too long, they'd give it a snip and tell the student to go sit in line to get his hair cut.

At another school I worked at, I saw a couple of Thai teachers ensuring the female students' fingernails were the proper length by having them line up for inspection and cutting as needed.

The last school I worked at was an all girls school. Each morning the young ladies dress length was inspected, if too short, the hem was let out right there at the gate. If the skirt was still too short, she had to wear a blanket around her all day. The dress code was/is very rigidly enforced there.

On a slightly allied matter, when i was at school things were very natural and i wish the girls had had a bottom coat trimming sometimes too. Sorry for the derail.

I thought the 'Hair Rule' was to decrease the transmission of head lice between Students.

Good to see any buds of individuality being stamped on from

What a bunch of idiots that run schools here.

Decibel meter used to punish students not screaming Thai national anthem

After coming under fire in recent days, a school in Pathum Thani this morning agreed to stop using a decibel meter to punish students not screaming the national anthem loud enough.
As screaming songs in the morning is a cornerstone of Thai education, Thammasat Khlongluang Wittayakom School had introduced a “disciplinary measure” by which it would measure students’ volume using an application called Decibel X. Those unable to exceed 85 decibels were forced to sing the anthem again – once more if they could hit 80 decibels and twice more if they couldn’t.
It should be noted that anything above 85 decibels – already equivalent to heavy road traffic – is considered harmful, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. A screaming vacuum cleaner is about 75 decibels.
The measure was meant to promote “harmony and discipline,” according to Winai Pansuwan, assistant director of the school.
But, after an avalanche of complaints and criticism of what an absolutely stupid idea it was, Winai said the school had now dropped it.

I never heard anyone mention head lice although they are a common enough problem.
The girls have two choices. The baseline is hair off the shoulders. If they participate in Thai dancing then they are allowed long hair, which must be tied with a standard ribbon, usually blue or black. At least, it was that way in 3 government schools.
I believe it is all about conforming with a set of rules.
This is not always bad thing. For example, at one school kids started turning up with sports branded backpacks. Suddenly it all stopped and a teacher explained that it was unfair to the poorer students, that the standard uniform and no jewellery rules reduced teasing and bullying.
Mobile phones are a separate issue.

What's should be more of a concern, is that parents [as a collective] seemingly accept such Draconian ideals and practices.
As they're easily subdued to the ever present conditioning of a deeper authoritarian state and associated subliminal militarism consciousness.

Has little to do with the promotion and practice of education - not in a highly familiar culture.

Could easily be resolved if the broader parental circles would voice their dominance over this highly imaginative authoritarian mindset.
Guess that's not going to happen any time soon.

School administrators threaten boycott of Kao Klai party over haircut conflict

The Association of Secondary School Administrators has threatened to boycott the opposition Kao Klai party, unless one of its MPs offers a public apology and retracts his allegedly offensive remark against a school teacher who cut the hair of a student.

The association president, Mr. Ratchachai Sornsuwan, said in a statement, today (Sunday), that Kao Klai MP Wirote Lakhana-adisorn accused the teacher in question of violating the rights of the student and suggested that he resigns as a teacher and considers himself a criminal.

Although the teacher deserves to be punished, Mr. Ratchachai said the association had checked the teacher’s background and found him to be highly responsible, caring for the students and wanting them to maintain discipline.

He added that, unless Mr. Wirote apologizes to the teacher, the association will boycott the Kao Klai party and all its activities.

Responding to the threat on Twitter, Mr. Wirote said that he would no longer talk about Thai education, if he cannot protect students from being intimidated or harassed by teachers, adding that he believes most teachers do not agree with the abuse of students by some of their colleagues.

It appears "rules" are no longer required, anarchy is the acceptable to some, new norm.

One suspects the "broader parental circles" consist a the highly vocal minority. The unspoken majority of "parents" worldwide, utilise edicts from an "official authority" as convenient crutches.

When I was a lad a list was provided, sometimes with proscribed shops to be used for the purchases.

    As Shutree suggested:

There are social reasons for the students own well-being. IMHO.

But as most are aware, the possession of the most expensive trainers, improves many aspects of growing up in some cultures, including:

    Ones corridor swagger,
Ones ability to catch a rugby ball,
Ones ability to throw a ball into a ring,
Ones ability to entice ones "loved ones" to open his/her flies or legs
Ones ability to post photos "ONLINE", of your newest purchase and "improve" your social standing/increase ones endorsement income

Let's also not forget the capitalist manufacturer would be bankrupted and the countries GDP would nosedive. Got to keep that currency "value" respectable.

A tray full of GOLD is not worth a moment in time.

So, some kid comes to school with longer than prescribed hair. The student and his parents are aware of these rules. His peers are aware of these rules.

The student gets punished by having a snip of his hair cut and then gets teased for it because he broke the rules and got punished for it.

Suddenly, the boy has been "abused". His rights have been violated!

Seems like Thailand is becoming more like America everyday.
