Hong Kong activist Nathan Law says arrived in London

LONDON (Reuters) - Hong Kong pro-democracy activist Nathan Law said he had arrived in London after fleeing the former British colony where China has imposed a security law.

“With my backpack and small luggage in hand, I boarded my night flight. I had no idea what future awaited me. Only one thing seemed certain. My destination: London,” Law said on Twitter.

“There’s always one message I have: Hong Kongers will never give up. We aren’t fractured. On the contrary, we’re well-equipped to face the next difficult battle.”

Law told Reuters earlier this month that the rest of the world should stand up to President Xi Jinping and start to put human rights above financial gain.

Why did you leave China to go to Canada and then the UK? Were you disillusioned as well?

Allegations? Your words. You went to the UK from Canada . . . you're not originally Canadian and your style of writing/expression as well as the obvious love for all things China makes it quite simple

Do you have a link for your fake allegation? Or is it another one of your fantasies.

Now, there are many other ways one can link the other places I have lived in into the your fake statement.

Did I move from UK to Switzerland or Qatar to Switzerland, did I move from xxx to yyy ....

Note from my previous post, China is not mentioned as being "lived in", but accuracy is somewhat esoteric for some posters here on TD.

Only 3,124+ other combinations to go. Potentially many more if I returned back to any of them more than once.

Must try harder, as I indicated previously.

Chinkies already taking steps to make sure there are no opposition candidates in any elections.

With their deliberately vague laws they can now lock up any candidate who wants to keep a level of autonomy for "fomenting hatred of the state" or whatever shit rules they've brought in to stifle the democracy movement.

Hong Kong (CNN)A primary election held by Hong Kong's democratic opposition may have been illegal under the new security law, China said Monday, in a statement that shows how far the goalposts have moved just two weeks after the sweeping legislation was imposed on the city.

More than 600,000 people took part in the vote over the weekend, designed to narrow down the number of pro-democracy candidates in September elections to the city's legislature. Similar efforts have been tried in previous years, but this was the most organized yet, as the opposition aims to seize a historic majority in spite of recent obstacles, not least the new security law.

Imposed by Beijing on the city
on July 1, the legislation criminalizes secession, subversion, terrorism, and collusion with foreign forces. Officials previously said it will affect a tiny handful of Hong Kongers, while critics pointed to its broad scope and ill-defined offenses as reason for alarm.

    In a
statement late Monday, the Liaison Office, Beijing's top representative to Hong Kong, said the primary election contravened the law -- raising the possibility hundreds of thousands of people were now implicated in an offense.

"With the support of external forces, opposition groups and leaders have deliberately devised plans to hold this so-called 'primary election,' which is a serious provocation to the current electoral system and caused serious damage to the fairness and justice of the Legislative Council elections," the Liaison Office said.

The statement came after the Hong Kong government said it was "conducting an in-depth investigation" into the primary, and would "immediately refer the case to relevant law enforcement agencies" if there was any illegal activity.

One chief complaint of the government was organizers' stated goal of achieving a 35-seat parliamentary majority, allowing the opposition to block legislation and potentially force the resignation of Chief Executive Carrie Lam.

"If this so-called primary election's purpose is to achieve the ultimate goal of delivering what they called '35-plus' with the objective of objecting or resisting every policy initiative of the HKSAR government, it may fall into the category of subverting the state power -- one of the four types of offenses under the national security law," Lam said Monday.

The Liaison Office statement went further, accusing Benny Tai, the onetime leader of the 2014 pro-democracy Umbrella Movement and organizer of the primary, of scheming to "seize the governance of Hong Kong and stage a 'color revolution'."

"Who instructed (Tai) to openly manipulate the election in so high-profile a manner? Who gave him such confidence?" the statement added, without providing evidence or suggestion of who Tai was supposed to have colluded with.

Tai, who could not immediately be reached for comment, could face at least 10 years and up to life imprisonment if found guilty under
the security law of colluding with a foreign power in "rigging or undermining an election."

Nor might he be the only person punished. Antony Dapiran, a Hong Kong-based lawyer and author of "City on Fire: The Fight for Hong Kong," predicted that after Beijing's statement declaring the primary illegal, the government may move to "disqualify all candidates selected through the primary process (maybe even all who ran in the primary)" from September's election.

Them be the rules, Jim Lad.

Similar to many countries. China has election rules and protocols agreed by the relevant government body.

Can't have any Tom, Dick or 'arry holding elections, making up rules to suit somebody's agenda, can we.

Florida's "hanging machine punch" votes ..... Remember what chaos that caused.

Well, it's a 100% increase and that is massive. Plus, you have the Independents, Greens etc . . . so, you're woefully uneducated about the process, as usual.
Add to this ignorance by thinking that the US is the only yardstick in the world's democracies and you look the utter fool . . . yet again.

Everyone knows that you and OhOh have a particular hard-on for the country - and you're fine to do so . . . but having it consume you to such an extent is ridiculous

If only these "multiple parties" delivered on their manifestos all would praise them. Unfortunately they very, very rarely do so. Which brings us back to your wondrous 2 party system, as generally manifested around the world, not as you see it, focused any on one particular country.

What and when have the past half century or so of this wondrous system delivered to the citizens it allegedly represents? Have they improved the lot of the masses or the elite. Health care, education, legal access, human rights, opportunities to better themselves ....

I see a lot of cutbacks/declines in all these areas. Share with us here your "great steps forward" delivered from your wondrous system.

Nobody is forcing you to "consume" that which you believe is distasteful, here on TD.

You as an individual chose or not, to reply. When you do it would be so much more enlightening if you arose from your cesspit of attacking the speaker and address the content.

China summons U.S. ambassador to discuss ‘bullying’

BEIJING — China has accused the U.S. of seeking to obstruct its development with recent steps to sanction officials who undermine local autonomy in Hong Kong, summoning the U.S. ambassador in Beijing to lodge a protest.

Vice Foreign Minister Zheng Zeguang told Ambassador Terry Branstad that threatened sanctions and the withdrawal of special trading privileges for Hong Kong are not about democracy and freedom in the semi-autonomous territory but an attempt to contain China’s development.

“I want to warn the U.S. sternly that any bullying and unfairness imposed on China by the U.S. will meet resolute counter attack from China and the U.S. attempt to obstruct China’s development is doomed to failure,” he said, according to an account of Wednesday’s meeting carried by state media.

President Donald Trump signed the Hong Kong Autonomy Act into law on Tuesday, as well as an executive order affirming an earlier decision to eliminate preferential treatment that has been given to Hong Kong, but not mainland China.

The U.S and other Western democracies have grown increasingly concerned over developments in Hong Kong, and in particular China’s imposition of a national security law that is seen as a threat to freedom of speech and the right to protest.

At the same time, the Trump administration has challenged China on multiple fronts, treating it as a strategic competitor, an approach that seems only likely to expand as Trump faces a tough battle for re-election this fall.

Zheng told Branstad that the U.S. has also “interfered with China’s internal affairs and harmed China’s interests on the issues of Xinjiang, Tibet and the South China Sea, further exposing its nature of naked hegemony.”

He urged the U.S. not to go “further and further on the wrong path.”

The U.S. Embassy did not respond immediately to a request for comment.
