Victim of Nonthaburi water-bottle poisoner warns fellow runners

A Nonthaburi runner has warned fellow exercisers to beware of an assailant who he believes injected poison into his water bottle, putting him in hospital.

Posting under the Facebook name Etoriw Sibaht, the victim said he went running in Nonthaburi’s Makut Rommayasaran Park at 8.30pm on Friday (June 20) and placed a bottle of water beside his running route. After finishing his run, he drank the water but found it tasted strange. Shrugging of the taste, he went out to dinner with friends. Soon after, he began suffering blurred vision, shortness of breath and vomiting before he passed out. He woke up in hospital, where a doctor said he might have had a stroke.

However, he later learned there was a possibility he had been poisoned with a substance that caused a condition similar to a stroke.

Realising that the strange taste of the water might have come from the poison, he returned home and examined the bottle, only to find it had been punctured by a needle hole.

He reported the incident to Rattanathibet police station and also posted a warning to other runners.

Obviously, something else has happened, the true circumstances of which are shrouded in this somewhat bizarre yet quaintly Thai account.

Tests show man's water bottle left on a park bench was 'spiked'

Chemical analysis has confirmed that a runner's water bottle left on a bench in a park near Nonthaburi City Hall was spiked, likely by using a syringe needle.

Weerachai Phutdhawong, a professor at the Department of Chemistry at Kasetsart University, revealed the test results on Friday (June 25). The professor tested the 60 millilitres of water left in the bottle using a gas chromatograph mass spectrometer and found it contained xylazine (98 per cent) and methyl paraben, etc. Xylazine is an anaesthesia used by veterinarians for animals such as cattle, which veterinarians prefer to use with cats.

In 2013, there was a case of the drug being used by criminals to steal property.

Virot Sibaht, the user of Facebook page ‘Etoriw Sibaht’, had revealed his experience in a post. He said he suffered from blurred vision, shortness of breath and vomiting after drinking water from the bottle before passing out while hanging out with friends. He had drunk the "spiked" water after exercising in the morning. The water had a strange taste so he did not finish it, he said, adding that on closer scrutiny, he found a small incision, like by a needle, on the bottle. He then explained his experience on Facebook and warned other runners to be careful.

Prof Weerachai said the victim could have been poisoned by the drink but he escaped as he had consumed only one-third of the bottle.

A needle could have inject the drug into the bottle in 10 seconds, he said. In 2013, the Food and Drug Administration declared xylazine as a controlled drug. Veterinarians who need to use xylazine must ask for permission first and the general public must not be allowed access, the FDA had said. However, violators can get away easily as there is only a fine for possession, he said.

He urged police to repeat the testing he had done at the Department of Medical Sciences to confirm the results. The victim, Virot, said he was relieved to know the test result as many people claimed he had made up the story.

He believed that the thief had possibly set his sights on a smartwatch worth around Bt10,000 that he was wearing. Virot added that henceforth he would not place his water bottle on the bench anymore and would avoid running in that park for a while.

So to punish those foreigners he injected a Thai's water bottle.

    Yeah, that makes sense.

Security in Nonthaburi park tightened after two joggers poisoned

Nonthaburi municipal officials were sent to a public park, located in the government complex, to survey sites for the installation of more surveillance cameras on Saturday, after two joggers were poisoned, apparently by con men.

According to Nonthaburi provincial police, two joggers fell unconscious after drinking water from their own water bottles, which had been left temporarily unattended.

The perpetrators, who the police believe operate as a team, used a syringe to inject a sedative substance, believed to be the animal sedative Xylazine, into the plastic containers. When the joggers returned, and took a sip of the water, they rapidly lost consciousness. Then the gang stole their personal effects.

According to the police, two joggers have been poisoned so far, with one of them in a serious condition, spending 3 days in an ICU.

Nonthaburi governor, Mr. Suchin Chaichumsak, told the media that he has ordered more lighting and CCTV cameras to be installed in the park and the guards to step up patrols in the park.

Joggers and visitors to the park have been warned not to leave their water bottles unattended.

Pol Maj-Gen Paisarn Wongwatchamongkon, the provincial police commander, said he was confident that they will catch the perpetrators soon.

Water samples from the victims’ bottles were tested and found to contain Xylazine, which is colorless and tasteless and quickly absorbed by the body.

Nonthaburi water-bottle spiking cases likely aimed at sexual assault, say police

Sex rather than theft was likely the motivation behind the curious cases of spiked water bottles of joggers at a public park in Nonthaburi province.

Police on Friday (July 10) announced progress in investigation into the cases at the park in front of Nonthaburi City Hall following reports last month of joggers being hospitalised after drinking water from their bottles.

Tests showed the water had been spiked with xylazine, likely by using a syringe needle. Xylazine is an anaesthesia used by veterinarians for animals such as cattle, but preferred for cats.

“Two similar incidents were reported on June 15 and 19, and both victims were males aged 43 and 42 respectively,” said the police. “They suffered from blurred vision, shortness of breath and vomiting after drinking water from their bottle before passing out and had to be hospitalised. Preliminary investigation on the water bottles and the victims' urine found traces of xylazine.”

Police said they had been working with local administration offices who told them the public park was a known meet-up place for homosexual men. Since the victims did not report any valuable items stolen, officials believed sex was the motivation.

“We have investigated nine suspects who were frequently visiting the park, all are male and were carrying items such as condoms, lubricant gels as well as homosexual video clips on their phones,” said the police. “All the suspects are booked and their DNA has been collected to test if it matches that found on the water bottle. We should have the testing results soon.”

Nonthaburi Governor Sujin Chaichumsak said that upon being alerted to the incidents he had ordered municipal officials to deploy surveillance staff in the park and other public parks in Nonthaburi to prevent such incidents from happening again. “We have also installed more lighting and CCTV cameras in suspected areas to ensure people’s safety,” he added.
