Disabled Austrian swindled out of 10 million baht by “girlfriend”

Sanook reports that a 49 year old disabled Austrian man, who thought he had found his soulmate in Chiang Mai, has been swindled out of about 10 million baht by his sweet-talking lover. Love blossomed as they continued their relationship online, and marriage was in the air or so he thought.

The pair were the same age and she would care for him and help him cope with his disability. He bought her a house, 2 expensive cars and financed a shop. Then a man turned up claiming to be her brother, but in reality was her ex-husband. Now shes disappeared and it turns out the house was never bought at all.

Police and lawyers have demanded cash and now the man is staying at a retirement home in Hua Hin while he figures out what to do. Hes in need of money for an expensive surgery, and has offered a reward for anyone who can track down the supposed love of his life, who turned out to be a common fraudster.

2 years ago G.P. came on holiday to Thailand, and despite a spinal injury that left him with limited mobility, he travelled all over the kingdom before arriving in Chiang Mai.

There he met Amy, also 49, a taxi driver. They immediately hit it off and she took him under her wing and they travelled extensively together. A relationship blossomed. Then he went back to Austria. They kept in touch via social media and his feelings grew stronger.

He made the decision to move to Thailand and promised to improve Amys life. Then came the financial commitments. He bought her a 4.5 million baht house, a 2.9 million baht Mercedes Benz, a 1.1 million baht Honda HR-V, paid a million for decorations for the house and financed her dream of a silver shop.

They decided to marry, making it easier for him to reside in Thailand. Then her brother turned up. He was obliged to buy frequent expensive meals for them all, often at a cost of 5,000 6,000 baht. Later he discovered this was her ex-husband.

Then it emerged that the money supposedly paid for the house was not 4.5 million at all but just a 250,000 baht down payment. She kept the rest, and the silver shop never existed. Now she has completely disappeared and hes discovered that she has changed her name 5 times.

G.P. contacted Chiang Mai police and a lawyer, but they both needed money to act on his behalf. He says hell be happy if he gets back just some of his money and wont press charges if he can get a settlement.

The foundations of any solid Thai/farang relationship.

What he should have done is buy her a second hand Honda Wave, rented a B15,000 per month house, and told her he was on a limited income, then take it from there.

I feel sorry for the Austrian who was lured into thinking that he had a B.I.L

You'd feel sorry for him if he wasn't such a plank.

So I'm a mug, who by the colour of my skin, flexed my assets.

Not being Brad Pitt or you, I doubt I would have been of any interest to the Isaan Lovelies without them stepping up the social ladder.
Not that big of a mug

I (as the only one on TD) has lost a fair bit in Thailand. But I have gained a lot too. So..

Sadly I didn't have your knowledge and experience

My Thai Dentist used to warn me about Thai Women Buddha bless him.

Sure, there are landmines out there ready to go off, but I don't find Thailand a minefield.

There are heaps more good women than bad ones out there. No need to pick out one who wants to take advantage.

Unfortunately, scammers are not exclusive to TH. Happens in PI too, as well as other developing countries.

In my hometown, I've heard of this British guy who built a 5M-peso house for his wife; this was > 10 years ago. I've seen the house - it's big! Anyway, last I heard, the woman gambled, lost all money. They separated and the guy went back to the UK, I think. Tsk tsk...

Ooh.. This might amuse you.. It's about an Australian man who got scammed by his Filipina GF. He contacted the program "Raffy Tulfo in Action", and they helped him search for the woman & agree to a settlement. Woman looked dubious (I'm being polite).

When they interview the Aussie, it's in English, so you'll catch the drift.

    Part 1

    Part 2

Edit: I doubt that the Filipina can make payments now, since there are no tourists due to covid. No one will be renting the apartments. Aussie guy is f****d.

There are other foreigners who have sought help ffom that TV program, and they've been helped. The scammers are named & shamed, which is good. Is there a similar TV program in Thailand?

I've seen them come and I've seen them go here. So much so that when a new farang rides into town the girlfriend does her best to avoid me and him meeting. I always get the blame if the farang walks even though we never met.

A school teacher here goes online to meet a farang. Reason being she's a million and half in debts. Up till now she's had 3 farangs come. 2 walked after finding out her debt problem. The 3rd, a German, she is going to marry once the lockdown is removed. I haven't met the German and I'm damn well sure I'm not going to if she has her way. It's not that I'll tell of her predicament but she just can't afford to take that chance. By the way the second guy, an American, skipped after paying a large deposite for a piece of land. He told her he was going home to do some rock climbing.

It disgusts and highly irritates me that Asian....particularly Thai and Filipina girls.....do this kind of thing.

^ & ^^ I pity the men but... I'm sure they had warnings from their friends/ family.

There's a saying in my language: walang manloloko kung walang magpapaloko. Meaning: no one will fool (someone) if no one lets himself/ herself be fooled.

^This goes for love or investment schemes (pyramid scams).

Which reminds me... I still have some shares in a gold mine in Nigeria...
