Culture Ministry proposes holidays from July 4th to 9th for Songkran celebrations

Thailand’s Ministry of Culture will propose, to the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), the declaration of special public holidays, from July 4th to 9th, for belated Songkran celebrations, which were postponed from mid-April due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Culture Minister Itthiphol Khunpluem said today that the period is suitable because July 4th and 5th are a weekend and, since July 5th is the Asalha Puja religious observance day, July 6th can be another holiday.

By declaring the special Songkran holidays, Thai people will have a total of six days off to celebrate the water-splashing festival, said the Minister.

Alternatively, the celebrations could be held at the end of July, when there is a special holiday for the birthday of His Majesty the King, he added.

The Culture Minister added, however, that the issue must be discussed with health officials in the CCSA and the results of the easing of lockdown restrictions in the third phase in June will need to be assessed.

The Culture Ministry should go have a chat with the Education Ministry. Thai government schools are scheduled to start again on Wednesday 1 July so students and teachers will get 3 days together then get 6 days off, then go back for one day (Friday 10th July), get the weekend off then ... start again. Again.

And the Thai school year this year will be 7 days short of the legal minimum anyway. Adding extra holidays in July will just make it worse. No ploplem, eh? Make 'em work weekends to make up the deficit. Watch this space.

Yeah. You are right. And when all the ICU beds are filled with people drowning to death and someone YOU care about* needs one of those beds for a non covid related problem, well, they are just shit out of luck eh?

*assuming there is someone in your sorry ass life that you care about of course.

Will this holiday coincide with a lifting of the alcohol ban?

Driving home 500kms when Somchai is sober is no fun at all. [at]♂️

...dumb: few tourists on hand to generate "traditional" enthusiasm...the folks who propose these "ideas" need to leave their self-interested bubbles and get out more...

Resume the school year on the 1st but make it a pupil free day, put the Songkran public holidays on the 2nd, 3rd and 7th with pupils back at school on the 8th.

    Minimal disruption.

...nowadays? definitely: tourists and their cash...private, traditional ceremonies don't generate much income...sounds cynical, I know, but the evidence is everywhere...

The Culture minister, the former mayor of Pattaya and son of the infamous Kamnan Poh, wishes to hold a week long festival in which millions of people indulge in frenzied drunkenness, close intimate contact in crowded environments and carouse during parties that last for days when a virus that has throttled the world in the worst pandemic since 1918 is still active?

    You simply couldn't write it.

Only two days ago his home beaches were closed and the sea barred to all and people still cannot eat a meal in a restaurant with a glass of wine.

    Beyond stupidity.

I've read some really vacuous shite written by farang looking through the prism of idiocy with their heads stuck up their arses but this little snippet must rank as the dumbest.

The gormless twat should check out Songkran in Khorat, Udon, Ubon, Surin, Sisaket, Phitsanulok, Ayyuthya, Saraburi, Naklua but perhaps he should have taken a closer look at the demographic at Central World in Bkk, near mind the young going at it like demented dervishes in the many burghs where this buffoon has evidently never ventured to outside of his Siam Paragon bubble of ignorance.

Tourism is around 12-15% of GDP annually, it ain't the bloody raison d'être.

There are only around 500 ventilators in the whole country and certainly insufficient number of nurses to manage them, assuming of course none is manufactured in China which given the production quality of the machines sent to the UK are more likely to kill rather save life.

This is just stupid. They need to accept that this is "the year without Songkran" and get on with school/work/whatever.

There was a Songkran, and ironically it was more authentic this year than it has been for decades.

Yes, good idea, we don't have enough national holidays, want more, maybe three months to celebrate the virus eventually dying off, otherwise the country would get back to much needed work.

So 3 months it is and the country should schedule to reopen in September, if no more infections.

Nothing been mentioned about the current border closure being extended past June 30th, not that it has any relevance to re-scheduling the postponed National Holidays.
