SA KAEO(NNT)-While some Cambodian people have called on the Thai government to let them work at Rong Kluea market in Sa Kaeo province, Thai authorities have not acceded to the request, as they are taking precautionary measures as recommended by the Department of Disease Control. Today, a group of Cambodians gathered at the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge to prevent trucks carrying Thai products from entering Poipet. The situation is now reported to be back to normal, after some 300 Cambodian police and military officers were deployed to the area.

Today, Pol. Col. Arthit Yakaew, chief of Sa Kaeo Immigration Office, led officers to inspect the Ban Klong Luk border crossing in Aranyaprathet district, Sa Kaeo province, after the gate wasn’t open as usual.

Ngor Mechroun, Vice Governor of Banteay Meanchey province in Cambodia, and a team of 30 officers met the Thai officers, and explained that the Cambodian authorities were assessing the situation, after some Cambodians threatened to close the Thai-Cambodian Friendship Bridge to block trucks carrying Thai goods. They asked Thai officials to allow a number of Cambodians to work at Rong Kluea market. Meanwhile, some 300 police and military officers were deployed to prevent protesters blocking the bridge.

Col. Chitsanupong Rodsiri, Deputy Commander of Thailand’s Burapha Task Force, said the officers were well aware of the situation. They were taking peaceful steps to settle the dispute, by asking Cambodian people to use carts to carry goods to the Thai side of the border, to help limit the possible spread of COVID-19. The situation has now returned to normal, with trucks carrying Thai products being permitted to cross the border.
