BANGKOK (NNT) - The fifth generation (5G) of wireless communications technology has been developed to speed up communication and connectivity. With support from three telecommunication providers, Siriraj Hospital is now using this technology to enhance its telemedicine system.

The Siriraj Mobile Stroke Unit, developed by Mahidol University’s Faculty of Engineering and the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital, is incorporating mechanisms from medical engineering and 5G technology into the hospital’s telemedicine system, with support from TOT, AIS and True.

The Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital, Prof. Dr. Prasit Watanapa, said today that the Siriraj Mobile Stroke Unit will help acute stroke patients access emergency services in a timely manner. This is like bringing a hospital into a community, as the unit can reduce mortality and disability rates. It can be used to treat patients with stroke symptoms, such as such as facial drooping, communication problems and weakened muscles. They can be treated within four hours of the onset of symptoms.

The TOT Senior Executive Vice President, Rungsan Channarukul, said today the 5G network capabilities are continually being enhanced. The technology provides faster speed and low latency, which are essential for transferring large volumes of data in real time. It plays an important role in the telemedicine system. In the future, TOT will use 5G to develop other areas to improve people’s quality of life.
