Gov't warns of fake Thai Chana app

BANGKOK (NNT) - As a means of gauging the risk of COVID-19, both the general public and businesses are now encouraged to use the Thai Chana platform for customer check-ins and venue occupancy monitoring. The CCSA is however, warning the general public not to download a fake application from SMS links claiming to be the official Thai Chana app.

The Ministry of a Digital Economy and Society’s Inspector General, Dr Polawat Witoolkollachit revealed today that the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has detected fraudsters working to steal personal information from the general public, by creating fake Thai Chana applications, and luring unsuspecting smartphone users to install one of the data stealing apps.

The center has also identified spam SMS messages sent to members of the general public with a link to a fake Thai Chana application download.

Dr Polawat said the government is not the sender of the misleading message, and advised the general public not to download any such application, as the Thai Chana platform is a web-based platform that requires no application to be installed on a smartphone, adding that related agencies are investigating the fake messages, in order to find and prosecute the senders.

The general public is advised to verify the web address of the platform, which is ไทยชนะ only. They can call the toll-free 1119 hotline with any enquiries 24 hours a day.

Thai Chana is an online platform developed to facilitate the reopening of businesses. Its purpose is to allow health authorities to reach out to persons who may have been in contact with COVID-19 more effectively, through customer check-ins and check-outs.

When visiting businesses such as shops, restaurants, or shopping malls, individuals are asked to scan a QR code at the entrance using their smartphone to log their entry, and do so again when leaving to log their exit. Businesses can generate a QR code themselves by registering on the platform’s website.

According to the CCSA, some 107,000 shops have already registered on the platform, while more then 11,757,000 people have already recorded their check-ins and check-outs during shop and restaurant visits.

The extension of the emergency laws with its curfew certainly does seem strange when the R number for Thailand is statistically less than 1 and has been at that level for several weeks. Similarly the desire to isolate the Eastern seaboard from the rest of Thailand by shutting its beaches and access to the sea ( but not to fishermen ) is perplexing when one notes that such measures do not encompass Hua Hin or other strands along the coast.

I have heard the reason is to stop the spread of the virus by making the area unattractive to visitors but given that we are told there have been no intra - BMA cases for several weeks, Bangkok being the only truly significant source of domestic tourism travelling into the area, this explanation lacks credibility.

This so-called platform for tracking and tracing is also beyond comprehension to me but despite researching the English speaking websites one simply cannot find an insight into its rationale.

    Ah well.

I don't understand. Maybe it's just me. So I asked the gf, who looked at the website, looked puzzled, then said it wasn't for farangs. Which didn"t answer my question.

Maybe someone can explain it to me:

I go into a store. I see a QR code. I don't need a special app but I scan the QR code. With what?

Assuming I have scanned it somehow, has it also scanned me? Scanned what? Does the shop have any record of my scanning them?

Obviously I am missing something. I think I'll go out to the shops and see what happens.

All Thai using smartphones have Line downloaded. The government tracking and tracing application is called Chana. All malls, supermarkets, stores etc have registered with Chana. The punter enters the outlet and opens their Line application and adds Chana as a 'friend' - this downloads the mobile phone application, I think. The punter's QR menu opens up and somewhere by the entrance th store should be displaying the QR sign which is then scanned by the punter who is required to complete the binary choice when capturing the QR i.e. checking in or checking out. Chana then records the data on its information base.

It's crude and cumbersome and mostly redundant. Out of the 2.6 million checked in during the first week of operation about 800,000 failed to check out.

Also, the strategy is futile - if x thousand visited Siam Paragon on a given day and 6 days later 3 of those are tested positive, are they going to trace all x thousand???

    Silly but there it is.

I forgot to mention, if you claim to have no smartphone or to have forgotten it they physically enter your name in manuscript in a register and telephone number. All mobile phone sims are linked to a confirmed ID/passport with an address. Fuck knows what happens if you claim to have no phone.

Also, once in the shopping mall, you have to then repeat the same exercise for every individual shop and eatery or supermarket.

    Only in Thailand.

^ Stop at the QR sign, take up your smartphone and point it to the sign for a second.
Then walk in, I doubt they check if you scanned the sign or not.

    Thank you. All becomes clear.

Using Line might be a smarter strategy than the UK designing their own App, with all the potential security concerns.

The wingman has just returned from a visit to Central festival mall here in Pattaya. Over a period of 40 minutes she has had her temperature taken three times and been forced to check in and out of the mall itself and two shops.

Quite simply, it is beyond ridiculous.

Some one in authority surely must, even in this country, be able to bring an end to this folly.

Err, I don't think you understand.

The NHS app tracks your body as long as it is attached to your phone, and all other bodies attached to their phones that were in close proximity to you at any given time. That is why it works. If you fall ill it can track and trace all those who were in close proximity to you during the time you were incubating. That is why it works.

Th Thai version is to the NHS system what Noddy books are to War and Peace.

A bit early to say that the NHS App works. My brother in UK sent me a note today about this very point. He said Matt Hancock was on Sky News this morning being very evasive about when the trial App running on the Isle of Wight would be rolled out nationally. My brother also said that he had seen very little information about the progress on this trial.
This trial App is Bluetooth based and Apple have stated publicly that it cannot function as promised on their handsets. The government denied this. We shall see how well it works once it is in general use.
My brother added that he had heard rumours of a second App being trialled in Sheffield, about which he had no additional information.

Meanwhile, I went to Global House today to try out the Thai Chana process. It was simple to scan in and out and I liked that it asked for feedback as to whether there were appropriate measures such as masks and cleaning in place.
