'Two survivors' after aircraft carrying around 100 people crashes in Pakistan

    PIA A320 crashes in Karachi.

Civil aviation officials have said at least two people have survived the crash of a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane in Karachi that had 91 passengers and seven crew on board.

The carrier originally said flight PK 8303 from Lahore had 107 people on board but a spokesman for Pakistan's civil aviation authority attributed the discrepancy to confusion in the tense aftermath of the crash.

Local TV stations ran footage of a man on a stretcher who they said had survived the crash.

Witnesses said the aircraft appeared to attempt to land two or three times before crashing in a residential area near Jinnah International Airport.

"The last we heard from the pilot was that he had some technical problem," PIA spokesman Abdullah H Khan said in a video statement. "It is a very tragic incident."

The pilot sent a Mayday and told controllers the aircraft had lost power from both its engines on its second attempt to land, according to a recording posted online.

After the aircraft reportedly called off an earlier attempt to land and went around for a second attempt, a controller radioed the pilot that he appeared to be turning left, suggesting he was off-course.

The pilot replied, "We are returning back, sir, we have lost engines," and the controller cleared the plane to land on either of the airport's two runways.

Twelve seconds later the pilot called "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday" and was again cleared to use either runway. There was no further communication from the aircraft.

It is feared there may be more casualties as the plane came down on houses in the Model Colony area in the city.

Mayor Wasim Akhtar said at least five or six houses were destroyed in the crash.

All sorts of rumours swirling: Landing gear failed, failed attemp at a belly landing, double engine failure.

The damage to the engines in this picture shows something amiss for sure.

Added: Although this picture can't be verified as of this incident right now.

    From Aviation herald:

A PIA Pakistan International Airlines A320-200, registration AP-BLD performing flight PK-8303 from Lahore to Karachi (Pakistan) with 90 passengers and 8 crew, had aborted the approach to Karachi due to problems with extension of the nose landing gear and performed a go around. While on a left downwind for a second approach to runway 25L, about abeam the threshold of runway 25L the crew requested to turn left immediately reporting they had lost both engines and repeatedly declaring Mayday about 5 minutes after the go around, the RAT (RAM Aír Turbine) deployed. Tower cleared the aircraft to land on either runway 25 (25L or R). The aircraft lost height and impacted a residential area called Model Colony, featuring concrete multistorey buldings on second final approach east of the aerodrome (presumably while on final approach to runway 25L) and burst into flames at about 14:40L (09:40Z). On the ground, near position N24.9116 E67.1881, five multistorey houses - including the Allied School Airport Campus - are being reported to have been de-roofed and set ablaze, debris is distributed over the streets.

Rescue and recovery services are on their way to the crash site.

Jinnah Medical Center reported around 12:30Z, that 15 bodies and 8 injured people (unclear whether the injured were occupants of the aircraft or people on the ground) were taken to the center.

Local videos show one of the passengers, a well known chairman of a bank, being pulled out of the wreckage with injuries but in stable condition.

The family of another occupant of the aircraft tweeted their family member was alive but injured having survived the accident.

Pakistan's Civil Aviation Authority have declared emergency for Karachi Airport.

The airline reported the aircraft carried 90 passengers and 8 crew. So far no information is available whether there are survivors. Saying anything more would be premature.

A ground observer reported the aircraft suddenly became silent in its final seconds of flight.

The aircraft was scheduled to land at 14:45L (09:45Z).

It is extremely rare to lose both engines at the same time.

The belly landing rumour may have come from the last instruction from the tower when they said they had lost engines.

There is a poor quality video purporting to show the plane's final descent.

^ Indeed lots of rumours abound at the moment. One that sounds very plausible is that the first approach was too high and fast and in the rush the gear was not lowered. Realised late and initiated go around with engines scraping runway. Damage caused engines to fail as they were in the circuit.

That would be a right cock-up so hope it doesn't prove to be correct.

The bank president must have been sat at the very front in biz/first. Looks like the rear of the aircraft took the first impact.

Look at the angle of the plane in the video (from about 16 secs).

Think I heard second survivor sat at 8F.

I'm afraid many more survived the impact, but died in the fire

That's exactly what the initial crash report says.

There was speculation on PPRUNE of a botched, very hard landing and a go around before this report came out. Would explain the damaged engines, and the gear is clearly down on its final descent.

According to a report from air traffic control seen by Geo News, the flight left the Lahore airport at 01:05pm and was scheduled to land at the Jinnah International Aiport in Karachi at 2:30pm.

The report said the plane had enough fuel in it to fly for two hours and 34 minutes, while its total flying time was recorded at one hour and 33 minutes.
At 2:30pm, the plane was 15 nautical miles from Karachi at Makli, flying at an altitude of 10,000 feet above the ground instead of 7,000 when air traffic control issued its first warning to the pilot to lower the plane's altitude.

Instead of lowering the plane's altitude, the pilot responded by saying that he was satisfied. When only 10 nautical miles were left till the Karachi airport, the plane was at an altitude of 7,000 feet instead of 3,000 feet.

The report states that air traffic control issued a second warning to the pilot to lower the plane's altitude. However, the pilot responded again by stating that he was satisfied and would handle the situation, saying he was ready for landing.
PK-8303's engines scraped runway thrice: report

According to an earlier report, prepared by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (PCAA), the plane's engines had scraped the runway thrice on the pilot's first attempt to land the plane, causing friction and sparks. Three long marks have been observed and recorded by the PCAA's experts on the runway.
Sources in the PCAA had said the plane's engines first made contact with the ground at the 4,500-feet marker, followed a second time at the 5,500-feet marker, and a third time at the 7,000-feet marker.

After the third impact, the pilot took the aircraft off into the air again, which officials found very strange as the cockpit did not inform air traffic control of any problem with the landing gear when it was already clear that it was the reason why it couldn't land properly.

There was no indication from the pilot or his first officer to the air traffic control that something was wrong with the plane. Experts are of the view that when the engines scraped the ground on the first failed attempt at landing, the engine's oil tank and fuel pump may have been damaged.

The engine's oil may have started to leak, which would have prevented the pilot from achieving the required thrust and speed to raise the aircraft to safety.

According to sources in the ATC as well as PCAA, the pilot made a decision "on his own" to undertake a "go-around" after he failed to land the first time. It was only during the go-around that the ATC was informed that landing gear was not deploying.

The pilot was directed by the air traffic controller to take the aircraft to 3,000 feet but he managed only 1,800.

When the cockpit was reminded to go for the 3,000 feet level, the first officer responded saying, "We are trying".

Experts said this failure to achieve the directed height indicates that the engines were not responding.

While approaching the runway from Malir, designated 25L, for the second attempt, the pilots also took a short distance of 1.5 nautical miles instead of the mandatory 7 nautical miles defined for such a large-sized plane.

The aircraft's failure to approach from the mandatory height and distance again suggests that the engines did not provide enough thrust and speed to do both functions. The aircraft thereafter tilted and crashed suddenly.

"The plane descended too fast, almost plunged," sources familiar with the report said.

I see the Pakistan Military get to be involved in the investigation, we have seen this sort of nonsense before in Egypt Air investigations.

They were probably unaware of several alarms, aural and visual, due to workload trying to land from a very difficult approach setup. 3500 ft at 5 nmi is a glideslope in excess of 6 degrees instead of a nominal 3.

A Hard landing, with the gear down, hard enough to scrape the engines? That's a crash and I doubt very much they could raise the gear after that and show no damage in the resulting photo that shows damage to the engine pods. This photo was taken after the subsequent Go Around.

Yes the gear is down on the final descent, one doesn't expect them to forget it again, having forgotten it the first time.

It could have been down on the first approach and raised too early after deciding to Go Around because they were too fast and but no way was it down when the engines scraped the tarmac.

Pilot error from about 20 miles out in my view.
