Flooding feared as storms blow into upper Thailand

Irrigation officials nationwide are on alert for the first heavy rains of the wet season, which will hit the North, Northeast, Central region and the East until Wednesday (May 13), according to the Thai Meteorological Department.

Royal Irrigation Department director-general Thongplew Kongjun has ordered to staff to remain at their posts in storm-hit areas to aid locals affected by the onset of the wet season, which usually brings flash flooding. He also instructed department staff to check whether water infrastructure could deal with the sudden increase in water volumes.

Meanwhile, related agencies have been ordered to provide timely and thorough updates on the water situation to flood-prone communities.

According to the Thai Meteorological Department, thunderstorms are expected until May 13 due to a high-pressure system from China, which is whipping up southerly and south-easterly winds in upper Thailand.

"sudden increase in water volumes" surely they couldn't be better prepared - the "dams/reservoirs are all empty!
    Am I missing something?
Odd that nowhere else is forecasting these storms?

^ They have been predicting them for this week in our area since last week and, after a couple of days ~42C, I am welcoming them with open arms. The last couple of days have seen a few big storms pass by and cooler temperatures but the all important rain is being a little shy...

Just so long as we don't get a direct hit from lightning again...

It's been a consistent cycle. Around 2PM the wind kicks up. By 4 to 5pm it's raining. Rains heavy at times and on and off for about 3 to 4hrs. Been very nice

^ 19°c luxury! + 10° here! TMD weather forecasting is usually pretty accurate, been screwed for about a week now here, changeable conditions, there computer modelling doesn't know what the hell to make of the data they are inputting!
Been silly hot here outside Udon, no rain for weeks now, lot of wind and storms though! The floor tiles were 32°c a couple of days ago, the floors have a 1m airgap underneath, just HOT! In the sun today was 51°c, shade 40+
Today 60% chance of rain, we will see, calm and clear now at 00:45.

Headlines like this are good for a laugh. Breaking news!

Here in Monsoon country happens every year FFS.

And surprise, surprise it will flood to varying degree and each of us are on our own to prepare and deal with it. Big gov will as they do every year warn us but as always do fuck all to effectively provide help to the little man residents of Monsoon Country.

We small village Isaanites know this and do the things necessary to reduce flood damage to homes, businesses and crops. Bring on the rain and flooding that goes with it. We gotta eat.

No rain here yet but it will come soon. No worries.

May be so but I'doubt the rains will be sufficient enough to fill the dams.

Hard to say but you may be right. In my location we only need enough to fill rice paddies to support our 1 crop a year.

Village water comes from a village reservoir and boreholes.

Hence, filling or not of dams not really a concern for us.

However, a big concern for big cities and surrounds who rely on large damed reserviors for home use and agriculture.

Well the rain didn't happen last night, Just wind. Gonna be upwards 38c I'd guess. The rain and sun has got the grass coming up all over. Soon it will be like a golf course.

May is the pre monsoon for us. It is enough to soften the ground, so the paddy can be ploughed and planted. June is the critical month when the rain is very sporadic. Too much or too little can destroy the season's crop. August and September are monsoon season for us.

Some lovely cloud formations here, huge isolated clouds. We just need one to sit on our village for an hour or two.

Okay I'll go out now and take a few pics of our local dam. And then again at the end of November, if I remember, and see if I was correct.

A personal gripe for long time as well, more so as a golfer and needing to know if it's going to be worth getting out of bed before sunrise based on the forecast. Have seen the rain sheeting in at 45° and the real-time forecast at that time is showing 0% chance of rain and clear skies, and the opposite isn't uncommon either. Got me beat, in Farangland if the forecast shows something like morning storms and a clear afternoon you can bank on it and make plans accordingly. Here, it's anyone's guess.

The "monsoon" rains are rarely sufficient to fill the dams, need at least one Tropical storm, two better to fill top up the catchment areas, trouble is they also bring doom & gloom!

have a look at the radar and forecast your own weather RainViewer is a good app, (good for on the golf course) even with it - you can be sure that you will have torrential rain in the next ten minutes - but NO it will veer away at the last moment, we have had storms all around us for the past week and not a drop of rain.

It reminds me on the cartoon seeing many years ago where the clerks from the "Forecast Office" going home, picking up their umbrellas: "You never know what the weather will get over night..."

This time of year is always difficult to predict. It isn't a simple cold or warm front that you see but a group of isolated clouds drifting pass. It can rain like hell on one side of the village and hot and dry the other. The best you can say is isolated thunderstorms in the region.

BTW, I want to take up golf again. I need to set up a net in the garden for extra practice. I used to be okay off the tee and the last 50yds or so. Always the second shot let me down and finding the bloody ball if I hit it too far...even when it's on the fairway.
