Iranian Missile Accidentally Hits Iranian Ship During Exercise, Killing 19 Sailors

Sounds like the same level of organisation as those Venezuelan "invasions".

(TEHRAN, Iran) — An Iranian missile fired during a training exercise in the Gulf of Oman struck a support vessel near its target, killing 19 sailors and wounding 15, Iran’s state media reported on Monday, amid heightened tensions between Tehran and the U.S.

The statement significantly raised the death toll in Sunday’s incident from what was reported just hours earlier, when Iran’s state media said at least one sailor was killed.

The Konarak, a Hendijan-class support ship, which was taking part in the exercise, was too close to a target during an exercise on Sunday when the incident happened, the reports said. The vessel had been putting targets out for other ships to target. The media said the missile struck the vessel accidentally.

The friendly fire incident happened near the port of Jask, some 1,270 kilometers (790 miles) southeast of Tehran, in the Gulf of Oman, state TV said.

A local hospital admitted 12 sailors and treated another three with slight wounds, the state-run IRNA news agency reported.

Iranian media said the Konarak had been overhauled in 2018 and was able to launch sea and anti-ship missiles. The Dutch-made, 47-meter (155-foot) vessel was in service since 1988 and had capacity of 40 tons. It usually carries a crew of 20 sailors.

Iran regularly holds exercises in the region, which is close to the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the narrow mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20% of the world’s oil passes. The U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, which monitors the region, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Iranian media rarely report on mishaps during its exercises, signaling the severity of the incident. This incident also comes amid months of heightened tensions between Iran and the U.S. since President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from Tehran’s nuclear deal with world powers in 2018 and imposed crushing sanctions on the country.

Anyone know the protocol in a similar situation that's being monitored by the US (or others), in regard to mucking in with the rescue effort, and esp if the US vessel is closest to the incident and better trained/equipped to carry out sea rescue missions?

The article didn't say the ship sank, or was sinking so probably didn't send out a Pan or May Day call. If it did I guess international sea law would apply and any ships in the area would have to respond.

I imagine the ship made it's own way back to port
Some people think it don't, but it be.

There are enough US navy ship around, you'd be hard-pressed to find any ships closer

The Iranians would never countenance asking the US for help.

They are the great satan, remember?

They would rather let the thing sink killing everyone on board, they all get their 72 virgins after all.

Odd, considering how much of a good friend the US has shown itself to be all the way from overthrowing Mussadegh and installing the Shah with his murderous SAVAK terrorising the population to endless sanctions and establishing military bases around the country

So under Samaritan guidelines and in some places law embraced by the 'civilised' world, US would be duty bound to muck in even if that risks escalation with Iran throwing the rattle.

    Killing 19 Sailors
sad for their mums and wives i suppose. but the iranian military along with their leaders are as bad if not worse than the nazis and the fewer of them there are, the better place the world will be for the rest of us.

their families will get a decent payout, and the sailors will be considered heroes dying for the cause so i hope you can manage to refrain from the orgy of self flagellation that you appear to be embarking on.

it is a disgusting regime, and the sooner it is overthrown the better, and so whenever i hear about members of their military losing their lives, i cant help feeling a little relief.

yes, its a pity for the mostly innocent soldiers and their families and kids, but the world in the 21st century is not for the fainthearted, and it certainly not for bleeding heart snowflakes like yourself.

Somayyeh Shahbazi Jahrouii hanged for defending herself against rape -

    December 4, 2019in Women's News.

In the morning of Wednesday, December 4, 2019, Somayyeh Shahbazi Jahrouii was hanged in Sepidar Prison of Ahvaz, capital of Khuzestan Province.

Somayyeh Shahbazi Jahrouii, 33, had been imprisoned for six years. According to her relatives, she had committed murder in self-defense against rape.

Somayyeh Shahbazi Jahrouii is the 98th woman to be hanged and executed during Rouhani’s tenure as president of the clerical regime.

The Iranian regime is the world’s top executioner of women. Since the beginning of 2019, it has executed at least 11 women which is an escalation in the number of executions of women compared to the 9 women executed during the entire year 2016, ten women in 2017, and 6 women in 2018.

As a consequence of the clerical regime’s failure to categorize deliberate murders according to their degrees, anyone committing murder is sentenced to death, regardless of their motives. Many of the women convicted of murder in Iran are themselves victims of violence against women and have committed murder in self-defense.

In days when the world is endeavoring to raise awareness about violence against women and eliminate this ominous phenomenon, the clerical regime in Iran executes a woman who was victim of violence. At the same time, it is shooting down protesters or killing them under torture, including a considerable number of women.

The Iranian regime is the world’s top record holder of per capita executions. The clerical regime deploys the death penalty as a tool for maintaining its grab on power and for silencing a disgruntled populace the majority of whom live under the poverty line.

At least 4,000 persons have been executed during Rouhani’s terms in office. The actual number of executions are much higher because the majority of executions in Iran are carried out secretly, away from the public eye where only the masterminds and perpetrators are witness to them. The Iranian Resistance calls for end to the practice of the death penalty in Iran.

No-one is duty bound to enter hostile foreign waters without permission.

    That's just fucking dumb.

Besides which the US probably didn't even know about it until well afterwards. There was an exercise, a few fireworks going off aren't going to look unusual to an AWACS.
