The Reuters version. You've gotta love the chinkies and their little euphemisms, unless of course HoHo you think there is "a profound impact on national security" in the the mainland drones scuttling around Chinastan trying to avoid unwanted government "reeducation".
China's Xi urges preparedness for military combat amid coronavirus epidemic: state TV - ReutersBEIJING (Reuters) - President Xi Jinping said on Tuesday China would step up its preparedness for armed combat and improve its ability to carry out military tasks as the coronavirus pandemic is having a profound impact on national security, state television reported.
So the UK is considering offering free Hong Kongers with BNO passports a path to UK residence (which I'm sure they'd prefer to the revolting chinky lifestyle).
Yet it seems even this has got the whinging chinkies in a snit.

Oh what's up Hoohoo, not another chinky tantrum you're trying to bury with irrelevance again?
BEIJING, May 29 — China today threatened the UK with reprisals for saying it could offers Hong Kongers a pathway to British citizenship if Beijing goes ahead with a new national security law in the Chinese territory.
Beijing “reserves the right to take corresponding countermeasures,” foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told reporters at a press briefing, after the UK’s foreign secretary said Britain may relax residency rules for holders of “British National Overseas” passports in Hong Kong. — AFP
If you want the full AFP story, you'll have to subscribe to their wire service like everyone else.
Before the 1997 Handover, there was an exodus of affluent and middle class Chinese from HK, to secure residencies elsewhere. This was when Vancouver was called Hongcouver. Most returned, after a few years spent securing their second residency in Canada, Oz, US, UK, wherever- and found that those that stayed where now considerably richer than them.
Unlike mainlanders, hongkies have total freedom of movement. They are free to emigrate if they so wish. So you will openly see if there is any mass exodus. Don't hold your breath though.
This is from a friend of mine, who lived in Hong Kong for 35 years and is still closely connected through family and some big business. He has and still does work on the board of a few large Hong Kong businesses .
This is roughly what he said last night.
"The current law that all the hoo haa is about was a law under british rule. It was rescinded in 1997 at the request of the then Hong Kong Governor to the CCP. Alway remember that Hong Kong was never a Democracy under the British.
Most of the money being given to the protesters to protest, originates from the USA.
There has been bomb making material found in Hong Kong. They believe there is more. Nobody wants this.
If the CCP want you, they will kidnap you anyway...with or without any law. (Booksellers...)
Many of the big business people want the protests to stop, so they can get back to doing things they do best, making money.
The CCP are very pissed off at Australia, not so much for the COVID comments from there PM, but because of the safe harbouring granted to one of their former spys/gooks, William Wang" (He was one of the CCP crooks that helped kidnap the book sellers.)"
This wasn't a comment on The CCP or the Hong Kong government. Just the facts as he saw it.
Hong Kong was under British Rule until 1997. China could pass all the fucking laws it wanted and it wouldn't have mattered a jot.
The 1997 Basic Law signed by China and the UK agreed to effectively leave Hong Kong untouched until 2047, with changes to laws only being permitted if they were passed through the Hong Kong administration.
Since the 19th century Hong Kong had its own administrative powers, to varying degrees, through the Legislative council.
At no point prior to 1997 did China have a legal right to arrest people in HK and spirit them off to the mainland for a bit of "reeducation", and under The Basic Law it has no right either.
There was an extradition treaty in place from 1889 which effectively mirrored similar treaties between other nation states.
It explicitly denied the extradition of people for political "offences".
Both the chinky stooge's attempt at an HK law - which started all the trouble - and the odious new chinky state version are intended to quell dissent, an obviously political "crime" in Chinastan.
You might think it doesn't matter because the chinky goon squads can snatch people and shove them in the back of a van and drive them off to Chinastan with the aid of the stooge's puppet police force, but it does. It shines a spotlight on state kidnapping.
To say "it was rescinded at the request of the Hong Kong Governor" is bollocks. It wouldn't have applied anyway because it ceased to be an inter-state Extradition Treaty when Hong Kong was returned to China.
Chinastan was expected to adhere to The Basic Law until 2047. Clearly it wants to advance that schedule, probably because millions of Hong Kongers can see what a fucking dictatorial shithole Chinastan is, and the chinkies want to nip this desire for freedom in the bud, so it is effectively tearing up the agreement.
What's to stop it doing it? The UK going to the ICJ?
Firstly it would probably take until 2047 to get a decision out of them, and anyway you can add to that that the chinkies selectively choose which international bodies they like, depending on whether or not its decisions favour them. So they will do what they fucking like, just like they did with the Wuhan virus, because they don't give a shit about anyone else.
"President Donald Trump launched a blistering attack on Beijing Friday, naming misdeeds that range from espionage to the violation of Hong Kong's freedoms, and announced a slew of retaliatory measures that will plunge US-China relations deeper into crisis."
Trump announces unprecedented action against China - CNNPolitics
And that's the crux of it.
As for Hongkies just accepting the new situation - I guess it depends on who you speak to. One of our neighbours is a Hongkie, cam to NZ 20 years ago or so, still goes back several times a year and he says that this is dire. The 50-year grace period is seen by many there as. aplanning stage to either leave or hope that China implodes or leaves HK alone as is/was.
Many of his ex-colleagues want to leave now, it's no fun having an angry and aggressive 1.3billion bear at your door
I think he was talking about the Law to congregate, not the one about extradition. As he said, Law or no Law, you are gone if you really piss off the CCP. Under the spotlight or not. How much international outrage was there on the news channels in NZ. Fucking none.
I'll check with him next week. He's also no light weight either. He did say that he's more worried about Hong Kong now, that he has ever been.
Also mentioned that the Watch shops (Rolex/Omega etc) have never done better business. All from young Hong Kongers. One of his mates owns a couple of these places.
Do you know this?He not a man known to bullshit, at all. I will ask him specifically again about this.He actually gave me the name of the Governor (Who he knew) who wanted to change the Law/document. I'll get specifics and let you know. You can then freely call it fucking bollocks or not.To say "it was rescinded at the request of the Hong Kong Governor" is bollocks. It wouldn't have applied anyway because it ceased to be an inter-state Extradition Treaty when Hong Kong was returned to China.
I agree. There are quite a few Chinese in China and Hong Kong that agree with this as well. Probably sick of the power that the CCP hold. However, there is one thing nobody likes, that's Trumps unpredictability. If he was normal and tough on China, it would be much better.
Thank you both for your replies.
Both of which from the Malay Mail, (a duplicate?), refer as their source the AFP article which you have failed to provide.
Failed to provide the quoted AFP link, once again.
See above.

Unless of course both provide the link to the AFP published opinion piece.

Britain may offer "path to citizenship" for nearly 3 million in Hong Kong

"Foreign minister Dominic Raab said on Thursday that if Beijing went ahead, Britain would extend the rights of 350,000 ‘British National Overseas’ passport holders.
On Friday the interior ministry said that this policy would apply to all BNOs currently in Hong Kong - a much larger group of around 2.9 million people according to British government figures.
“If China imposes this law, we will explore options to allow British Nationals Overseas to apply for leave to stay in the UK, including a path to citizenship,” Home Secretary Priti Patel said in a statement."

UK FM says 350,000 HK reidents (one definition), UK HS says all BNO's (definition number 2), while reuters says the figure at 2,900,000 (definition number 3).
I suspect the final "official" figure, after the "exploration" is completed, priced and voted on in the HOC and HOL.
Tto be announced after Buffoon Boris has agreed a trade agreement with Tweeting Twat and completed the Brexit negotiations ....
Not that the agreement won't be cancelled/modified in the future.
Why stop at the BNO's?
What will the fate of the remaining, unwanted 4,000,000 HK citizens be?
Do they not qualify for human rights protection by the former colonial regime or the leader of the worlds "greatest champion of human rights" - (if their worth it), ameristan?
Not currently it seems.
