Ditto, get it that China is playing a long game and qf doesn't care a toss what polite people think; you may be pissed off but won't stop buying their gear.

They're a fine upstanding member of the intl community by virtue of being a necessary part of the supply chain, ever amenable to those in a cash squeeze, while world leaders know the charming rogue nation is constantly prodding and probing for legal and illegal advantage, both of which need to be addressed. But they never can, since it covers a wide spectrum that stretches resources; so, next best is to concede some, ignore others, and trumpet a victory whenever they catch them at some minor misdemeanour, having cost a bundle for no real benefit while the CPC will simply focus on a different angle to the same end. The cat can only catch so many mice.

If things start getting out of hand, I wouldn't put it past the CPC to deploy Chinese riot cops on HK streets in HK riot cop gear. Then we'll see a few choice heads busted.

^ You nailed it. And the Chinese government knows how far they can push before people react, too......though the fascinating thing is that they may have bitten off more than they can chew this time.
    We will see.

When you're prepared to slaughter as many as you need to then how can you bite off more than you can chew?

Those are some pretty powerful molars right there and they can grind very small.

Not having a go, just saying, we're all adults here: You are playing a short game, you will be dead in 4 or 8 years, and until then have established rules that you must continuously observe under scrutiny; when you fail to comply to the word or the spirit or others could plausibly claim any of that, the CPC and influential forces within your own country drive you into a corner battling to prove you are not a Nazi. The other side is playing a long game, with no rules other than not get caught and if you do then fight it, and if that doesn't work then shrug and back off, regroup and prepare for the next attempt. How do you fancy your chances so far?

So, how do you cripple their economy without crippling your own, or convince manufacturers to move from China to US, and then keep that crap toy retailing at $2 instead of $15? How much will it cost to keep three more battle fleets off the Chinese coast, to what end, are you under any circumstances going to delete Shanghai or do you think they're crapping themselves, or chuckling, and what about the rest of the world that also needs those battle fleets, and how do you ever remove them without conceding that keeping them there was meaningless but you really don't and never did know what to do?

Not easy being a world leader, probably.

Not in HK they aren't. They could have waited until 2047 and then done what they like.

This is a kneejerk panic response to them losing control. They want their feet on HK's neck like they have on every other part of Chinastan.

That's part of the long game 'arry, sure they can wait for 2047 but what a coup if they can get the claws in sooner.

If this current play earns China any progress or concessions at all, they win, and if not then worst way they'll back off and keep knocking on the door every few years.

But it's a game they have to keep playing all around the country, in every province, real or imagined, where there is unrest (and there's quite a few) whilst still providing food and jobs and resources for an increasing population that has a history of not being shy of revolution.
Some people think it don't, but it be.

Here is a closely-kept forum secret : Jeff is actually Chinese and he speaks Mandarin. What he posts here has gone through Google Translate.

He is hinting at this by having a Chinese sage as his avatar. Inscrutable devils, these Orientals

    Impeccable logic.

Xi Jinping urges China's army to prepare for armed combat as Hong Kong protests restart over a new bill that would strip away the city's freedoms

Chinese President Xi Jinping urged his army to increase its preparedness for "armed combat" as protests in Hong Kong ramp up over a proposed new law that would effectively strip away the city's autonomy.

Xi on Tuesday told Chinese military officers on the sidelines of the National People's Congress (NPC) — an annual weeklong gathering of China's top legislative bodies — that the military must "explore ways of training and preparing for war" amid the coronavirus pandemic.

"It is necessary to explore ways of training and preparing for war because epidemic control efforts have been normalized," Xi was quoted as saying by the state-run Xinhua news agency, according to South China Morning Post.

According to Xinhua, Xi added that it was "necessary to step up preparations for armed combat" and improve the military's ability to carry out missions.

Mk's post refers to : yu-hug-me, which ends with :

"Read the original article on Business Insider"

A Reuters link would be useful if you have one. At 11am Thai time 29/05/2020, my search of Reuters produces this:

" No search results match the term "Xi Jinping urges China's army to prepare for armed combat as Hong Kong "
