    US paraglider plunges to death

An American pilot plunged to the ground on Wednesday (April 1) when his powered paraglider suffered a catastrophic problem after take-off.

Responding to a call at 8am, Sattahip Police Station deployed a police and rescue team to the scene of the accident near Huay Too 1 Reservoir in Chon Buri’s Sattahip district. They found the victim lying on the ground with severe injuries including deep lacerations to his chest. Friends identified the man as “Denis”, aged 60. Close by was the mangled wreckage of his paraglider.

The rescue team administered first aid and sent him to Wat Yansangwararam Hospital, but he died soon after reaching the emergency room. His friends told police that the victim had arrived for paraglide practice early and took off before everyone else. Soon after taking to the skies, his machine showed signs of a mechanical fault. As the wind strengthened, he lost control and the power-glider plunged to the ground. Police have contacted the US Embassy so that the victim’s family can be informed of his death.

So did the thing fall to bits or did "Denis" not know how to respond to a strong wind?

P.S. Another report says he's British.

A British man, aged 60, has been killed in a flying incident. He was flying when the paramotor developed engine troubles and plummeted into the ground in Bang Saray Tambon in Sattahip district, south of Pattaya.
Bang Saray police and rescuers from the Sawangrot Thammasathan Foundation were called to the crash site, that occurred in a grassy field near Moo 11 village.

The police reported that they found a seriously injured man lying on the ground near a black motorised parasail craft. He was wearing a green T-shirt and camouflage shorts.
The man was given immediate first-aid and then rushed to Wat Yanasangwararam hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police questioned his colleagues, who said the man was flying his powered paraglider over the area in a training session, when the engine broke down. He tried to make an emergency landing, but was unsuccessful.

Those things are fkin death traps.

Stupid wankers used to fly about 50ft over our house in Nong Prue.

Accidents waiting to happen, and I'm always glad when one goes down without harming an innocent (ie not necessarily stupid) bystander.

I thought they are basically a parachute with an engine. But I guess it comes down quite quickly and it is difficult to do a parchute roll with an engine strapped to ones back. RIP

What is lowlife is the cretin's attitude . . . and your priorities, it seems. Now, go write some more invective-laden rep-messages and try not to make every thread about you, like a cranky and lonely old man who makes up shit to be important.

These paragliders fly over our place in Banchang, so they're probably setting off from nearby Sattahip.
What surprises me is the height these guys get up to. I'm not sure if it's high enough to deploy a parachute, but I wouldn't set foot / arse in one of these flimsy contraptions without some sort of safety feature..
Anyway, guy died doing something he enjoyed so fair enough.

It is a parachute of sorts

But apparently one can have a reserve. But obviously one has to be high enough

Amazing what one can learn while self isolated.

    You dumb fool.

Snivel is celebrating the paragliders death. I merely questioned why the husband of the woman was asking for money. He had previous in that respect and the name of the gofundme account was not in his name. I merely asked for clarification of the names. I criticized the husband but I did not celebrate or gloat over the death of the woman.

    Practice?

Maybe it's best to learn the ropes or where they are before self isolating.

    HOW SAFE IS PARAGLIDING?

People often ask, “How safe is paragliding?” The best answer is: as safe as you make it. Any experienced pilot will tell you that the most important safety factor in paragliding is not wind, air pressure, or visibility. In fact, it’s not any external factor. The most important factor is the paraglider’s own attitude and preparedness.

A student with the right attitude will do far better in the long run than someone who happens to pick up the sport easily at the outset. Plus, remember that if you are a beginner learning to paraglide, you will have the choice to start out flying tandem with an experienced paragliding instructor who knows how to paraglide.

So here are 4 facts about paragliding safety you may not know. Hopefully, they will put in the right mindset for a safe and fun adventure!

    1. Statistically, Paragliding Is As Safe As Driving
Each year, about 1 out of every 10,000 Americans is killed in a car accident – there were about 32,000 deaths in 2011, for example. In Germany, where paragliding is much more popular than in the States, about 3 people are killed per year, out of 33,000 pilots. That comes out to 1 out of 11,000 pilots, slightly lower than the driving fatality rate. The driving fatality rate would actually be much higher if you counted only the people who drive, instead of the entire population. On the other hand, statistics tend to show that paragliding is much safer on average than activities like motorcycling or even horseback riding.

    2. Pilots Are Almost Never Injured Because Of Equipment Failure
Paragliders built today are uniformly very stable. They are designed to recover quickly in the event of glider collapse. So as long as you are using new paragliding equipment which you check before every flight, there is little risk of an accident resulting from equipment malfunctions. Almost all accidents happen because of mistakes made by the pilot, either in the air, or in their assessment of weather conditions before a flight.

    3. No Need For Speed
Paragliding is not really a sport for speed demons. (Hang gliding or Speedflying is probably better for those folks.) So if you’re getting freaked out because you picture yourself hurtling off a cliff like Wile E. Coyote – don’t worry! That’s not what paragliding is about. Instead, picture yourself gracefully floating on the breeze, with fantastic views of the landscape around you, a bit more like a butterfly.

If, on the other hand, you do want an adrenaline rush, paragliding can definitely deliver as there is nothing more exhilarating than doing paragliding aerobatics through the air and seeing the landscape beneath you in a completely new way.

    4. Feeling Vulnerable Is Good!
In general, we think paragliding is a very safe activity, as long as you are learning with a good instructor. It’s also relatively easy to get started. However, some beginners are lulled into a false sense of security because of how easy it can be. Instructors like to call this “intermediate syndrome.” So while we want you to have fun up in the air, don’t let your guard down just because things are going smoothly. Remember, more than 90% of injuries happen during the first ten flights a pilot makes. If you adopt the safety techniques your instructor teaches you during this critical period, you will greatly reduce the risk of accidents both in the short and long term.

I understood that paragliders had a reserve 'chute given the inherent instability and unreliability of a single parachute as a means of travel, one that relies on updrafts for progress.
