BANGKOK: Sakon Nakon province, in Thailand's upper north-east, became the first in the country to ban the sale of alcohol in efforts to stop the spread of the Covid-19 (coronavirus) outbreak.

The ban is effective from Tuesday until at least April 16, according to an announcement by Sakon Nakhon governor Monsit Paisarntanawat.

Thailand has been under a state of emergency since Thursday, during which governors in each province have been given jurisdiction to form measures that would curb the spread of the virus.

Social gatherings of all kinds have been forbidden throughout the country as people are urged to avoid travelling and stay home.

There is no reason to think alcohol spreads the virus, but other countries have also banned alcohol in an attempt to minimise gatherings where the virus could spread.

Violators to the alcohol sale ban in Sakon Nakhon face up to one year in prison and an up to 100,000 baht fine.

Chonburi province, home to the city of Pattaya, a red-light hub, has also closed its shops and bars. Since Monday, alcohol sales are only available during the daytime.

The alcohol bans come after a group of drinkers in Bangkok was central to one of the virus' main outbreaks.

Officials have advised people to refrain from social drinking to avoid spreading the virus.

Bangkok has also shut down most places where people meet such as schools, malls, sports clubs, and massage parlours. Supermarkets and drug stores remain open while restaurants are only allowed to offer take outs and deliveries.

Popular beaches in Pattaya and Phuket are also closed.

Thailand has reported 1,351 coronavirus cases and 10 deaths. - dpa/Asian News Network

GOVERNOR BANS BOOZE SALE TO CURB CORONAVIRUS SPREAD

SAKON NAKHON — Sakon Nakhon became the first province to ban the sale of alcohol in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus, though a trade guild said the move may have the opposite effect.

The order was issued by Governor Witthaya Chanchalong and effective from Tuesday until April 16, just as the province reported 12 confirmed cases of virus infection. Those caught selling alcohol during that time period faces a maximum jail term of one year and a fine of up to 100,000 baht.

The ban was imposed “in order to ensure that people are safe from the spread of communicable disease, coronavirus (COVID-19), Sakon Nakhon province must employ measures to guard, protect and control,” according to the order.

Indeed. I am in Sakon Nakhon province and it is not fake. Not even mum&pop shops are selling for fear of the fine. Headman went round those shops and told them yesterday.

The idea was to reduce social gatherings but it didn't stop a large attendance to a funeral yesterday. A 23 year old army kid who died of heart attack running in the heat of the day.

Seems that some are still making the rules up as they go along.

I'm off to 7 11 soon and although they had time regulations about when they can serve alcohol yesterday I will check if there is a total booze lock down today.

Thai Province Bans Booze Sales to Curb Virus, Others May Follow
By Randy Thanthong-Knight and Anuchit Nguyen

Sakon Nakhon is first of 77 Thai provinces to pass prohibition
Banning alcohol is one option to limit group-led contagion

Sakon Nakhon banned the sale of alcohol starting Tuesday at least until April 16. The move is designed to curb group drinking at home, a popular tradition among rural Thais, which could lead to the spread of the pathogen. Thailand has the highest per-capita alcohol consumption in Southeast Asia, according to a World Health Organization report.

Majority-Buddhist Thailand already has relatively strict rules that block sales of beer, wine and spirits during specific hours, and others among its 77 provinces could follow Sakon Nakhon’s lead if infections keep surging, according to health officials. The country has more than 1,600 confirmed cases and 10 fatalities.

“The government is pleading with citizens to avoid all social gatherings during this time,” Taweesilp Witsanuyotin, a spokesman for the Covid-19 center, said in a briefing Tuesday in Bangkok. Each provincial governor now has the authority to issue stricter measures, he added.

Banning alcohol would add a tier to state-of-emergency rules imposed by the government last week, under which non-essential businesses are shut and inter-provincial travel is discouraged. Gatherings are also banned.

Violation of the rule in Sakon Nakhon is punishable by one year in prison or a fine of 100,000 baht ($3,066).

Thai Beverage Pcl is the largest seller of alcoholic beverages in Thailand, with its array of spirit brands holding almost 80% of the domestic market, according to a report by Bloomberg Intelligence. ThaiBev share of the smaller beer market was 42% in 2018, according to Bloomberg Intelligence, while closely held Boon Rawd Brewery Co., best known for its Singha and Leo brands, had a 51% share.

One truly despairs of these people.

Lao khao will continue to be available among villagers and if they choose to congregate in their homes and drink, they will.

It's like the ban on the use of private swimming pools within condominiums which is meant to curb infractions of the social distancing protocol yet anyone can walk in the street with their chums as evidenced everywhere and public transport is still available. And in the television studios we continue to witness panels of whoever all sitting close together within three feet of each other thinking their masks make it all ok.

Yet I cannot swim alone in a 25 metre pool.

They just cannot seem to see the utter failure of their logic.

^ Who else has banned booze and closed single provinces and kept immigration offices open for the alien to immerse in and told Thais in Bangkok to stay home, when most of their homes are a 700km packed bus ride away? Whilst one of them stays in a German luxury hotel with a harem of 20 women and sends 160 of them back to Thailand

No, I think you'll find the Thais will take some topping in decision making. That covidiot Bojo and Trump look like masterminds compared to the Thai lot.
