To prevent a possible shortage of eggs for local consumption, Thailand’s Ministry of Commerce has imposed a 7-day export ban, effective today (Thursday) following a rush by consumers to stock up, in the aftermath of the declaration of a nationwide state of emergency.


Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanavisit said today that the temporary export ban might be extended if the egg situation, characterized by price increases and shortage in some places, does not improve by then.


He pointed out that the country’s daily egg production is 40 million, which is sufficient to meet domestic demand, adding, however, that sometimes there is a surplus of eggs, to the point where the Government has to shore up the prices to help egg producers.


He said that the shortage of eggs in some areas is being caused by a rush to stock up over the past few days, increasing demand by 2-3 fold.


He warned against the overpricing of eggs, saying that violators could face a seven-year jail term and/or a fine of 140,000 baht.


Mr. Jurin said that commerce officials have also imposed strict measures to combat overcharging for pharmaceutical products, including face masks, sanitizer gel and ethyl alcohol.

Singapore has managed to ramp up its import of eggs and food items from other countries in the past two days, Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing said yesterday.

A happy chicken is a good layer! Those extra nine chickens should be good for around 50 eggs a week once they start laying.

PM orders egg price monitoring

BANGKOK (NNT) - Since the invocation of the Emergency Decree over COVID-19, many people have been stocking up with necessary items, including chicken eggs, resulting in shortages in some areas, and some sellers have been exploiting this situation by profiteering.


Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has ordered the Ministry of Commerce to investigate and prevent the exploitation of the situation for profit. The Ministry will be investigating the entire egg supply chain, from farms to the hands of customers, ensuring fairness to all.


Officials from the Ministry of Commerce have inspected Kanokwan Farm, a large chicken egg producer in Nakhon Sawan, reported to be selling eggs at unreasonably high prices. They have filed a report at Nong Krod Police Station to launch formal prosecution.


The officials have also inspected Chanomporn Farm in Nakhon Pathom, where the owner has admitted to selling eggs above the regular price, raising it to 3.8 baht from 2.8 baht per egg. The farm was still selling 300,000 eggs at the time of inspection.


In Phitsanulok, commercial affairs officials have inspected an egg shop in Phitsanulok city, located by the railway, after receiving complaints from the public alleging that the shop sells a pack of eggs at 140 baht, which is considerably higher than the regular price.


The shop has been charged with a violation to the Price of Goods and Services Act BE 2542, which could result in up to 7 years imprisonment, or up to 140,000 baht in fines, or both.

Lots of Duck eggs in the shops now. Slightly higher in fat and cholesterol but also much higher in protein, vitamins, and Omega-3 oils.
(Duck eggs a favourite of the Paleo-diet people).

A lot of duck egg production is also less intensive (hormone and antibiotic content) than chicken (CP Farm) produce.

I was always told never to eat duck eggs if we collected them after a thunder storm... something about the heat increasing bacteria in the egg. I wonder if that is an issue producing duck eggs in the heat of Thailand?
