    Songkran 2020

I know it is mentioned elsewhere on the board, but thought it important enough for its own thread. The Government has officially cancelled the Songkran 2020 holiday this year, and 13 to 15 April are normal working days.

My guess is its to prevent the annual mass exodus of Thais from the cities to the countryside.

33 new infections as Songkran postponed

Why is it important enough for its own thread?

    Everyone knows about it.

Loads of Thais will ignore it and throw viruses at each other.

There will be a spike in infections.

    Anything else?

Thanks for the thread, Nidhogg. I didn't know songkran had been cancelled (or postponed until further notice as the article says) until I read this thread.

I wonder if sufficient Thai are smart enough to stay put, earn a bit of money, save on travel expenses, and avoid death on the roads?

If they do, the government will claim a victory for the drop in traffic fatalities. Having cancelled or postponed it, they probably think they don’t need to publicize the daily carnage?

No cave here, but wifey imparts whatever she thinks the farang might need to know; the only two things reported over the past days is that songkran might be cancelled or postponed, and some farang either brought the virus to or took it from Pty to some village.

I can't see Songkran being cancelled, the people want and expect days off work for their annual madness, and when this thing is over there will be a lot of pent up energy that needs to be released, so our glorious leaders could kill several birds with one stone by having the herd celebrate a combined Songkran/V-day.

Official Songkran events are pretty well cancelled everywhere, and you'd have to be a fucking hermit not to have noticed it.

It won't stop the chimps throwing virus at each other, look at the shit in the Chiang Mai moat and they throw that at everyone every year.

Good point about spreading it through the herd though, one way of doing it quickly as long as they don't whinge about their elderly relatives dying (which they probaby won't because they'll be more interested in the inheritance).

Meanwhile I'll continue to post related news in the Covid thread if anyone is interested.

It is not just the festivities that are cancelled, it is the holiday that is cancelled. Normal working days now.

At the factory that was announced and almost all the employees immediately applied for holiday time off. Trust me, outside of the nonsense BS in the biggest tourist places, Songkran will happen in some way. I know up North there are big plans and those will not stop.

Silly fuckers. If employers want to trim their workforces, they need only deny the requests and fire the ones that don't turn up to work.

It's not pointless to the hundreds of young lives that will be saved as a result of the cancellation.
I suppose the flip side of that coin is the virus will spread a little faster. ..
