    Gov’t sets EV promotional policy

BANGKOK(NNT) - In an attempt to promote Thailand as the capital of the electric vehicle industry, the National Electric Vehicle Policy Committee met today to discuss tax benefits for the construction of charging stations throughout the country.

Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak today convened a meeting of the National Electric Vehicle Policy Committee at the Ministry of Industry, where he stated the goal of Thailand becoming Asia’s capital of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing.

To achieve this goal, the government has commissioned the Board of Investment (BOI) and related agencies to consider offering investment packages to attract investors, especially parts and battery manufacturers.

Thailand aims to produce 60,000 electric vehicles by the year 2022.

The committee agreed that further promotion among the public, government agencies and motorcycle users is necessary to encourage them to switch to electric vehicles. Some of these promotions may include tax benefits, exemption of fees and the construction of more charging stations across the country.

The construction of more charging stations will be managed by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand and PTT.

How ridiculous. When I was in the Fil's last year, I noticed electric motosai's & trikes were quite common- especially in urban areas. I don't recall even seeing them in Thailand- probably because everyone is too afraid of the police, who would just find some excuse to fine you. We actually have a similar problem in oz, I reckon electric bikes & trikes would be a lot more common here, but nobody really knows- what is legal, and what is not? At the moment, they are just used as chariots for the elderly & mobility impaired.

I actually think electric cars/ bikes/ trikes would be a great idea for Thailand, given the dire pollution of the urban centres. So good luck with it, but as with everything Thai- don't hold yer breath. The entrenched oligarchs always find ways to stymie things for their own short term self interest. Be that democracy, microbreweries, banking competition, whatever.

^ I saw several e-Tuk-tuk in downtown CM last time I had a night out with some friends in the city. I remember that we didn't hear them coming, 4 of them like a mini e-autocad, maybe affiliated to an hotel I don't know.
