37-year-old arrested for running fake car rental company in Chang Phueak

A 37-year-old was arrested today, Feb. 21 on allegations that they were running a fake car rental company in Chang Phueak.

Napatchaorn Konthipetj was arrested by Chang Phueak Police in relation to running the Pan Car Rental Chiang Mai company. It’s alleged that Konthipetj advertised car rental services online offering to rent vehicles for between 500 to 600 baht per day, below the rates of other companies.

When people would book and transfer money, Konthipetj is alleged to have then claimed that the car had been damaged and was no longer available. No refunds were provided to those targeted.

The number of victims is unclear with claims that there were “many” with reports referring to both Thai and foreign victims. A farang is clearly visible in one of the photos shared by Chang Phueak Police with the story (see below).

Konthipetj was charged with defrauding the public and using a computer system to provide false information that will lead to damage of people.

Konthipetj was detained in custody pending a court hearing.

Not sure how that can really be described as a fake car rental company- I'll defer to my TEFL colleagues on that one. It was just a scam.
